Ice types are some of the most unpredictable attackers in Pokemon Go. One of the best in this bunch is Walrein, a mighty PvP threat that can help you rake up several Go Battle League (GBL) wins.

If you want to add this powerful Pokemon to your team, here’s how to do it, along with its evolution, shiny odds, and recommended moveset.

How to evolve Spheal into Walrein

You can evolve Spheal to Sealeo with 25 Candy, and then into Walrein with 100 more Candy.

Walrein is an Ice/Water-type Pokemon.

Spheal is a rather common spawn, with more likelihood of being found in Rainy in-game weather and beach biomes. Whenever you encounter it, don’t forget to use a Pinap or Silver Pinap Berry to earn double Candy and evolve it fast.

You will be happy to know that the Spotlight Hour event on July 9, 2024, between 6 PM and 7 PM local time, will feature Spheal with a bonus of 2x Candy for catching any Pokemon.

This is a brilliant opportunity for you to not only catch Spheal and evolve it in no time but also collect plenty of Candy to power up Walrein.

Best PvP moves

The best PvP moves for Walrein are Powder Snow with Icicle Spear and Earthquake.

Powder Snow is popular for its incredible energy gains of 4 EPT (Energy Per Turn) which helps it use the handy Icicle Spear in no time. This Charged Move costs only 40 energy but boasts an amazing 65 damage, making it all but compulsory for opponents to shield it.

Due to the excellent offensive coverage of Ice-type attacks, this strategy to force shields makes Walrein a great lead, threatening other popular PvP leads like Dragonite, Togekiss, Altaria, and Landorus Therian.

If you think Steel types that resist Ice-type moves are safe, think again! Walrein also packs the dreaded Earthquake, helping it take out targets like Metagross, Excadrill, and Registeel.

While its moveset is mighty impressive, Walrein’s USP is its viability in all three PvP Leagues. So, if you catch one with perfect IVs, don’t hesitate investing Stardust to power it up.

Walrein’s Pokemon Go stats are 182 Attack, 176 Defense, and 242 HP.

Best PvE moves

Walrein’s best PvE moves are Frost Breath and Icicle Spear.

While its Attack isn’t too high, it’s pretty bulky. This helps it become a worthy option for your counters against Dragon, Flying, Grass, and Ground-type Raid Bosses, along with stronger options such as Mamoswine, Baxcalibur, and Galarian Darmanitan.

Fast Moves

  • Powder Snow* (Ice)
  • Frost Breath (Ice)
  • Waterfall (Water)

You can only teach Powder Snow to Walrein using an Elite Fast TM.

Charged Moves

  • Icicle Spear* (Ice)
  • Blizzard (Ice)
  • Water Pulse (Water)
  • Earthquake (Ground)

You can only teach Icicle Spear to Walrein using an Elite Charged TM.

Both Powder Snow and Icicle Spear are necessary to make Walrein the powerhouse it is in Pokemon Go. With dominant performance across all GBL formats and a decent addition to your Raid counters lineup, it is worth using both Elite TMs on Walrein.

Can Walrein be shiny?

Yes, shiny Walrein is available and you can get it by evolving a shiny Spheal.

The odds of encountering a shiny Spheal are 1 in 512 encounters, so be sure to check every spawn you come across in the wild.

If you’re looking for more Pokemon viable in the Great, Ultra, and Master League, get Annihilape and Dragonite in your team.
