Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Empoleon Tera Raid type & moveset

Empoleon has the Ice Tera Type in its Pokemon Scarlet and Violet 7-Star Tera Raid. This makes it weak to Fighting, Fire, Rock, and Steel-type moves.

You should stick to Fighting and Steel-type counters as Empoleon’s STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) Water-type moves can hit both Fire and Rock-type Pokemon (Steel-types moves as well, in this case) for super-effective damage.

Coming to its moveset, Empoleon can have any four of the following moves during the Raid battle:

  • Surf (Water)
  • Grass Knot (Grass)
  • Flash Cannon (Steel)
  • Iron Defense (Steel)
  • Ice Beam (Ice)
  • Snowscape (Ice)
  • Blizzard (Ice)
  • Best counters for Empoleon Tera Raid in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

The best counters for defeating Empoleon Tera Raids in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are Metagross, Iron Hands, Corviknight, and Poliwrath.

Facing Empoloen is tricky as any stat-lowering moves used on it will result in its Special Attack being boosted by two stages, thanks to its Competitive Ability.

Empoleon has pretty good bulk, but its 88 Defense stat is the most exploitable, so Physical Attackers are your best bet to quickly cut Empoleon down to size.

Best Metagross strategy for Empoleon Tera Raid

pokemon scarlet and violet empoleon tera raid counter metagross
Metagross is a Pseudo Legendary with a great mix of offense and defense.

The Pseudo Legendary Metagross made its presence felt in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet after the release of the Indigo Disk DLC, and this powerhouse is one of the best species to take down Empoloeon Tera Raids.

With a massive 135 Attack stat and powerful Steel-type moves like Meteor Mash, Metagross can dish out a lot of damage. Additionally, it can chip in extra damage with Bullet Punch, a Priority move.

If all these weren’t enough already, Metagross received the move Heavy Slam in Gen 9, and with this Pokemon weighing up to 1212.5 pounds, it is bound to deal huge damage figures with this Steel-type move based on the weight of the species.

Best Iron Hands strategy for Empoleon Tera Raid

pokemon scarlet and violet empoleon tera raid counter iron hands
Iron Hands has one of the highest Attack stats in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, at 140.

The Paradox Pokemon Iron Hands is one of the hardest-hitting species in Scarlet and Violet and is ideal for Empoleon Tera Raids.

The popular Belly Drum and Salac Berry set helps to maximize Iron Hands’ Attack, allowing it to destroy Empoleon effortlessly. You can also go with the item Assault Vest to boost its Special Defense and turn it into an unstoppable tank, cushioning Empoleon’s attacks.

Drain Punch not only does it do super-effective damage but also recovers health, keeping this formidable Pokemon healthy for a long time during the Raid Battle. Not to mention, starting with Fake Out will make Empoleon flinch, helping your teammates set up stat-boosting moves or weather.

Best Corviknight strategy for Empoleon Tera Raid

pokemon scarlet and violet empoleon tera raid counter corviknight
Corviknight is known for its incredible bulk and recovery during battle.

Corviknight has always been bread and butter for most Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Tera Raids due to its exceptional Bulk Up and Body Press combo.

Bulk Up boosts Corviknight’s Attack and Defense stats while Body Press uses the Pokemon’s Defense stat for damage calculation. With this duo, Corviknight can hit Empoleon super-effectively after you add the Fighting Tera Type.

Additionally, Corviknight can use Roost to recover lost HP and remain healthy throughout the Raid Battle, making it a deadly force to be used against Empoleon in its Tera Raid battles.

Best Poliwrath strategy for Empoleon Tera Raid

pokemon scarlet and violet empoleon tera raid counter poliwrath
Poliwrath has a very evenly set stat distribution, making it an asset in battles.

Right off the bat, Poliwrath excels in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Empoleon Tera Raids as its Water/Fighting type helps it resist the Raid boss’ strongest moves. That’s not all, as its Water Absorb Ability not only makes it immune to Water-type moves, but it also heals 1/4th of its HP when hit by them.

With Belly Drum, Poliwrath can maximize its Attack and use Drain Punch to hit hard and stay healthy throughout the battle. Leftovers is an excellent item that recovers 1/16th of its max HP at the end of every turn, syncing well with Water Absorb and Drain Punch.

You can also add Amnesia to reduce Empoleon’s Special Defense by two stages, making it a boon for teammates who are using Special Attackers during the Raid battle. All in all, Poliwrath is an excellent addition to make quick work of Empoleon.
