GTA 6 is still a long way out, and despite players getting their first taste of the new title with the trailer, it won’t be released until 2025 if things go smoothly.

Despite the release being far out, GTA 6’s first trailer gave fans a lot of insight into the game’s setting, characters, vehicles, and more. It’s exactly what you’d expect from Rockstar, a detailed and immersive open world, which seems to be an accurate representation of Florida, USA, focussing a lot on Miami, which is known as Vice City in the GTA universe.

Leonida is the Florida-equivalent state in GTA 6, and while we know all this about the game’s setting, what about the timeline? Here’s everything we know about when GTA 6 is set.

What year is GTA 6 set?

Rockstar Games have provided no official confirmation regarding a year or time period that GTA 6 is set in, however, based on the trailer and the franchise’s history, we expect the time frame to be modern day.

From the trailer, it’s pretty evident that this is the case, as Vice City and the state of Leonida reflect that of modern-day Miami and Florida. We get to see modern cars, with some even returning from previous GTA titles, as well as contemporary clothing on the characters and NPCs.

There is also a social media platform in the game that can be seen in the trailer, which further supports its modern-day setting.

That said, the exact year or timeframe in comparison to GTA 5 is unclear, but we can assume it’s a similar time difference from when GTA 5 was released (2013) to when GTA 6 will be released (2025), which is around 12 years.
