Information regarding Grand Theft Auto 6 has been hard to come by, eliciting exasperation amongst eager fans. With a staggering nine-year interval since the release of GTA V, this period now marks the most prolonged hiatus between Grand Theft Auto game releases.

The enormous success of both GTA Online and its base game has played a significant role in the prolonged anticipation for GTA 6. The title has astonishingly sold over 140 million copies on a global scale, and the numbers continue to soar. Is there a GTA 6 release date?

At the time of writing, GTA 6 still does not have an official release date, but Rockstar confirmed on February 4 that the game is officially in development. Numerous reports point to the game being years away from arriving.

An insider anticipated a 2024 release date but also mentioned Rockstar’s deadlines are constantly changing. Another leak suggested GTA 6 is set to arrive in 2025, and this comes from a source that previously predicted the delay that hit Hogwarts Legacy, so it may be accurate. Prominent leaker Tom Henderson also claimed that the game won’t release until 2024 or 2025, so we still have a long way to go.

A recent Take-Two earnings report revealed the company is eyeing a very profitable fiscal year for 2025, “launching several groundbreaking titles that we believe will set new standards in our industry and enable us to achieve over $8 billion in Net Bookings”. Players were quick to connect the dots and assume GTA 6 is one of those groundbreaking titles.

What is the GTA 6 map? Setting & more

For quite some time, it had been rumored that Vice City will be the setting for GTA 6, and we got our first look at the map in the infamous gameplay leak that took place on September 18. Many questioned if it was fake, but these leaks were confirmed to be real.

Aside from showing gameplay, the leak also gave coordinates for the map, and one player was able to use this information to estimate the size. It seems that this location will be larger than Los Santos.

At the time of writing, no other information has been revealed about the map, and it’s possible that the developers could choose a different location for the finished game. So, we’ll have to wait to hear from Rockstar Games themselves.

GTA 6 story & characters rumors

Currently, there is no confirmed information about the plot and characters of GTA 6. However, reliable insider Jason Schreier of Bloomberg claimed that GTA 6’s story will revolve around a “Bonnie and Clyde” type pair, one of whom will be the franchise’s first female protagonist.

The rumor is that these two are bank robbers who are on the run from the law after committing numerous heists. This fits the tone of Grand Theft Auto perfectly, as many of these stories feature heists and robberies.

The gameplay leak showed footage of a male and female character who might be the protagonists. However, since the game is still in development, those might have been stand-in models that will be replaced later.

Unofficial GTA 6 leaks and teases

Notable Rockstar insider ‘Tez2’ claimed that the post-launch content for GTA 6 will include new cities and a single-player DLC. Take-Two Interactive stated that GTA 6 will set creative benchmarks, so if this leak is accurate then that’s one way they could achieve that.

Players are convinced that they may have seen images of the GTA 6 map on a shirt found in GTA Online, with some pointing out that the location in the picture “doesn’t look like anywhere in Los Santos.”

As for gameplay, Tom Henderson suggested that you’ll be able to purchase cryptocurrency in GTA 6, tying in with the speculation that GTA won’t return to a 1980s setting and will be modern.

Keep in mind that most of this information is based on speculation. Even though Rockstar Games confirmed the gameplay leak to be real, this is all subject to change throughout the development of the game.

What platforms will GTA 6 be on?

Rockstar Games haven’t revealed what platforms GTA 6 will release on, but considering how late its rumored release is, it will most likely release on current-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Of course, it’s possible that they could also release a version for the PS4 and Xbox One. GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived on PC after their console releases so the game will probably arrive on that platform as well.

Will GTA 6 have crossplay?

Since it’s not confirmed what platforms the game will release on or if it will have online multiplayer, we also don’t know if the game will have crossplay.

Cross-platform play is not available in Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online, so the upcoming title may not have it either. However, crossplay is becoming the industry standard, as popular multiplayer titles like Fortnite have it. So, perhaps it may be included.
