From harming pedestrians and messing with police officials to damaging the open world and stealing, there are plenty of actions that trigger a wanted level for your character.

Cheat codes
Here’s how you lower wanted level in GTA 5 through cheats:
- PC – Press ~ on your keyword to enter the cheat menu and type LAWYERUP in all caps. This will reduce your wanted level by 1.
- Xbox – While the game is open and you’re in the open world, press RB > RB > B > RT > RIGHT > LEFT > RIGHT > LEFT > RIGHT > LEFT
- PlayStation – While in the open world, press R1 > R1 > Circle > R2 > RIGHT > LEFT > RIGHT > LEFT > RIGHT > LEFT

Run away quickly in a car
You can lower wanted level in GTA 5 by getting into a relatively quick car and driving as fast as possible to maintain distance between yourself and the approaching police forces. Once you’re away from their sight, head to a secluded location like an alley or a rural track and wait till the wanted level is lowered automatically.
You can also keep switching cars to fool the police and lower your wanted level as they usually stick around searching for the car they last saw you in or the one you committed a crime with.
Best location to lower wanted level in GTA 5
If you cannot get away from the police, the best location to lower your wanted level in GTA 5 is the underground tunnel that can be accessed from the Del Perro Freeway. Cross the Las Lagunas Blvd. and enter the opening on the right side of the road.

Enter railways tunnels to hide from the police
GTA 5 police won’t enter areas where vehicles don’t run traditionally, including railways tracks. So, one of the best ways to lower your wanted level in the game is to pick a nearby tail track and then enter a railway tunnel. You won’t be observed from the top and eventually, the police will stop searching for you.
Off-road areas and underground tunnels like the one mentioned above also function similarly, so you can rely on them to lower your wanted level as well.
Go Underwater
Going underwater is another way to lower wanted level in GTA 5 but it only works when you’re deep into the water and outside the police’s visual range. Maintaining oxygen levels is also key when trying out this method, so be sure about the risks you’re taking here.
How to lower wanted level in GTA Online
While cheats don’t work in GTA Online, most of the remaining methods should be just as effective. On top of that, after reaching rank 21, you can easily get rid of the police by calling Lester who can lower your wanted level for $200/star.
Lester removes your wanted level for free if you complete the Doomsday Heist in GTA Online.
As a CEO or VIP, you can also bribe the police in GTA Online but it is unsurprisingly very expensive. In GTA Online, you also have the ability to buy a Scuba suit from stores and Ammu-nation that makes being underwater for long durations and lowering wanted levels significantly easier than it is in the standard GTA 5 story mode.
How long to lose wanted level in GTA 5
Here’s an estimate of how long it takes to lose a wanted level in GTA 5:
- One Star – Stay hidden from the police for 30 seconds
- Two Stars – Stay hidden from the police for 45 seconds
- Three Stars – Stay hidden from the police for one minute
- Four Stars – Stay hidden from the police for one minute, 15 seconds
- Five Stars – Stay hidden from the police for one minute, 30 seconds
Why lower wanted level in GTA 5?
The police in GTA 5 is a lot more strict, vigilant, and clever when compared to previous games in the franchise. At one-star, you’ll be arrested and getting out of legal trouble costs money. At two-star wanted levels and higher, police will be trying to kill you which can hinder your progress and cost a ton of resources.
