Xbox and PlayStation

Here’s how to change your GTA 5 character on Xbox and PlayStation consoles:

1. Launch the game and when you’re in the open world, hold the down button on your D-pad.
2. A character menu appears. Do not release the down button on the D-pad.
3. Use the right analog stick to choose a character from Franklin, Trevor, and Michael.
4. Once you’re sure about the decision, release the down button on your D-pad and your GTA 5 character will change!

GTA 5 doesn’t let you change the controller layout and controls, and many players have been stuck in parts of the story where switching the character is obligatory. After beating the prologue in GTA 5, players will be able to play as Franklin, and switching characters becomes available after Mission 4, where Michael joins the fray.

When players reach Mission 16, they will unlock Trevor as a playable character, and finally, at Mission 20 all characters will be available for free switching between them. Some late-game missions will lock the switch feature, but only throughout the length of that objective.
