A Megalodon in Sea of Thieves

The high seas are full of dangers, and we’re not just talking about other pirates. The Megalodon is a mythical creature in the real world, but in Sea of Thieves, it is a very apparent danger. Here are all Megalodon types in the game and where to find them.

Sea of Thieves is a very social experience, getting your pirate pals together no matter which platform or console they are on. However, it’s not all sea shanties and treasure, there are some serious threats that you can come across. And no, we’re not just talking about the pesky Lavenderbeard error.

Here is everything you need to know about Megalodon in Sea of Thieves so you know what’s in store for you when one of these giant beasts spawns.

All Sea of Thieves Megalodon types

There are a total of five Megalodon variants in Sea of Thieves with each having a slightly different color to make them distinguishable. Here is the full list:

  • The Hungering One – Blue with green eyes and a blue fin
  • The Crested Queen – Dark purple with purple eyes and purple fin
  • The Shadowmaw – Dark gray with orange eyes and red fin
  • The Ancient Terror – Yellow-green with yellow-green eyes and yellow-green fin
  • The Shrouded Ghost – White with pink eyes and pink fin

The Shrouded Ghost is the most rare of the five, appearing much less often when a Megalodon spawns. There’s no defined percentage chance on which Megalodon will appear for you, but it is common knowledge among players that The Shrouded Ghost is a bit of a white whale so to speak.

What’s most interesting though is that no matter which Megalodon spawns, they all act the same, have the same attacks, and take the same amount of damage. This means that your strategies for taking them on shouldn’t change which is great news since killing them is no mean feat.

Where to find Megalodon in Sea of Thieves

You’ll need to be sailing the high seas to get a glimpse of these massive sharks.

Megalodon can technically spawn almost anywhere in the seas of the game but some spots have an increased chance of finding them. For example, the deeper ocean areas such as between the Sea Dog Tavern and Wanderer’s Refuge is known to be a great location for Megalodon.

Places you’ll need to avoid are anywhere too close to shore as Megalodon either do not spawn there or will in fact de-spawn if you venture near land. Additionally, if you check your map and see another pirate crew tackling a Megalodon in an area close to yours, one will not spawn for you.

How to beat Megalodon in Sea of Thieves

Once you encounter a Megalodon, you’ll need the right strategies to take them down. Using cannonballs as your main tool here is the way to go but you can damage the sharks with pistols if you wish.

You’re going to want to keep your distance as much as possible and keep a close eye on them rising from the water. If they do so, and you see those large mouths open, they will be winding up for a charge attack on your ship. Ensure you’ve got the sails at full mast to try and dodge this.

What you will need to keep in mind is that the Megalodon’s health fluctuates depending on which ship you are on. For Sloops, you’re looking at approximately 13 cannonballs to defeat them, 18 for a Brigantine, and a whopping 30 for a Galleon. You will have a larger crew with the latter two ships but it will require all hands on deck to get enough cannonballs off regardless.
