Is Skull and Bones like Sea of Thieves?

Skull and Bones has set its sail, and it has been drawing comparisons to Rare’s Sea of Thieves, as there aren’t a lot of AAA pirate games available. But, based on all we know, how does Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones fare?

Both Skull and Bones and Sea of Thieves are multiplayer titles that allow you to go from rags to riches, despite the former game’s gritty undertone, in contrast to a more whimsical approach in the latter. It’ll be hard not to put them together, and more so when they’re live titles, which means they’ll be competing for your time.

However, both of them focus on completely different things, so it all boils down to what sort of experience you want to have while being a pirate.

That said, if you’re curious about Skull and Bones being like Sea of Thieves, here’s all you need to know.

Difference between Skull and Bones and Sea of Thieves

The major difference between Skull and Bones and Sea of Thieves is that Skull and Bones is more about the ‘ship’ aspect, while Sea of Thieves is a complete pirate adventure.

Skull and Bones focuses heavily and only on naval warfare, while Sea of Thieves sees you play as an actual pirate who also goes on treasure hunts and combat outside of boat combat. Because of their focus, Skull and Bones has more in-depth shipbuilding and customization and much more detailed naval combat, but it misses out on any meaningful on-foot gameplay, unlike Sea of Thieves.

Consider Sea of Thieves as a pirate “adventure” and Skull and Bones as a more pirate “ship battle” game.

The pair scratch two completely different itches, with the main thing they have in common being they put you into the shoes of pirates. Since they focus on two different sides of the pirate’s life, Ubisoft will be hoping there is space for both of them.
