Swashbuckling sandbox Sea of Thieves arrives on PS5 after being Xbox and PC exclusive for years. If you’re wondering whether it has cross-platform support to play with friends on different systems, here’s everything you need to know about its crossplay.

Every time you log in to Sea of Thieves, you’re given a fresh ship with a few supplies and you and your crew can set sail and do whatever you like. The game truly excels when played with friends, so with its PlayStation 5 arrival on April 30, will those on PS5 be able to play with their friends on Xbox and PC?

Here’s everything you need to know about Sea of Thieves’ cross-platform status on PS5, Xbox, and PC.

Is Sea of Thieves crossplay?

Yes, Sea of Thieves is cross-platform between PS5, Xbox, and PC. No matter your platform or launcher (Windows app or Steam), you can play with your friends on any other platform.

How to use crossplay in Sea of Thieves

Crossplay will be on by default in Sea of Thieves if you’re on Xbox or the Windows app. However, if you’re playing through Steam or PS5 you’ll need an Xbox account to use crossplay.

Once signed in to Xbox, you can play Sea of Thieves with other Xbox and PC players on their Xbox account, no matter your platform. I use the Microsoft app’s party chat to speak to my friends on Xbox when playing, but the in-game voice chat works well too.

How to invite friends in Sea of Thieves

To add friends in Sea of Thieves, you’ll need to make sure you’re Xbox friends with those you want to play with, then invite each other before setting sail.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to inviting friends in Sea of Thieves:

  1. Ensure you and your friends create Xbox accounts if you haven’t already.
  2. Make sure your Xbox accounts are friends with each other.
  3. Launch Sea of Thieves and head to the ‘Play’ tab.
  4. Select ‘Adventure’ or ‘The Legend of Monkey Island’ depending on what you want to play.
  5. Select ‘High Seas’ or ‘Safer Seas.’
  6. Hit ‘Charter a Ship’ and select your ship based on your party size.
  7. Choose an open or closed crew.
  8. Press ‘Confirm and Assemble a Crew.’
  9. Press X/1 to open up your Xbox friends list.
  10. Click on the friend you want to invite and press ‘Confirm.’

How to turn off crossplay in Sea of Thieves

Only console players can turn off crossplay in Sea of Thieves and here’s how:

  1. Head to settings by pressing Y.
  2. Scroll down to Matchmaking Preferences.
  3. Switch the ‘Prefer Xbox Players with Controllers’ setting to ‘Yes.’
  4. Once confirmed, you’ll see a message telling you you’re sailing the seas with players on Xbox and controllers only when loading in.

Bear in mind PC players don’t have the Matchmaking Preferences option so will be forced to use crossplay with those on console. Whether this system will be implemented on PlayStation and how it works remains to be seen.

Does Sea of Thieves have cross-progression?

Yes, Sea of Thieves has cross-progression so no matter which device you play on, your progress will carry over. Just make sure you use the same Xbox account and you’ll be all good to go.
