To change a companion’s weapons in Starfield, you must first initiate a gear trade with them. This can be done by picking the ‘let’s trade gear’ dialogue option during a conversation. After this, transfer the weapons you’d like your companions to wield from your inventory to theirs.

Then, just follow these steps to equip your companions with different weapons in Starfield:

Press LB on controller or Q on keyboard to switch over to their inventory menu.
Select the desired weapon and press Y on controller or B on keyboard to equip it.
Companions will require ammunition to use the weapon. With this in mind, it’s best to add plenty of ammo to their inventory.
