Bungie have been going through troubles as of late which has left the Destiny 2 community on edge. Uncertainty among fans looks to have hit an all-time high amid reports of Sony potentially taking over the studio.

Despite the new seasonal update, Destiny 2 is struggling to win favor with the community. The game’s player count plummeted right before Season of the Wish‘s release, partly due to the news of major layoffs at the studio. According to reports, around 100 employees were let go which immediately drew concerns from fans regarding the live-service title’s future.

Doubts surrounding Bungie have only escalated following an IGN report that featured some worrying quotes from current employees. Besides painting a bleak picture of the studio’s morale, the report also suggested that it could be susceptible to a Sony takeover in the future.

According to the report, Bungie could lose its status as an independent subsidiary of Sony if it fails to meet certain financial targets. If such a takeover is indeed triggered, Sony would effectively take full control. Naturally, this adds a ton of extra pressure on The Final Shape which was recently delayed to June 4, 2024.

Many players within the community have been left distressed by the noise around Bungie. A Reddit post by user ‘BehemothRogue’ even stated that “The end is here, and it won’t be a quick one.” Fans seemed to resonate with the statement and some even welcomed a Sony takeover.

One user said, “I see this as an absolute win. Bungie management has proved their greed and incompetence over and over again. Sony on the other hand has a great track record with their second-party studios. Insomniac, Guerilla, Sony Santa Monica, Media Molecule, Naughty Dog.”

Some players flat-out admitted to being burned out and expressed their indifference, “I don’t really care at this point anymore. Destiny 2 isn’t really innovating in ways that make me want to stick around after the Final Shape.”

The consensus looked to be pretty dreary as players were vocal with their concerns about the game and Bungie as a whole. It remains to be seen if a Sony takeover ever becomes a reality, but players will be hoping The Final Shape expansion can improve the situation.
