The Call of Duty Next event previewed the first-ever Zombies mode for the Modern Warfare series, set to launch on November 10 with Modern Warfare 3. However, despite initial excitement, disappointment soon followed as players quickly slammed the mode’s new direction.

Since its first arrival, Zombies has served as an integral component of the Call of Duty franchise, and for the first time in the MW saga, it’s coming to Modern Warfare 3. Zombies began with the release of World at War and has continued through ten Call of Duty titles, which included different dev teams leading the mode and adapting it to their own style.

Over the years, the Zombies mode has cultivated a dedicated community within the CoD fan base, appealing to those who enjoy round-based survival gameplay and the opportunity to unravel hidden narrative elements.

While each title has retained elements from its predecessors, MW3 is set to offer a fresh perspective on the concept of Zombies, and with the mode’s first look behind us, fans weren’t too excited about what they saw.

Fans call out “painfully boring” MW3 Zombies

After the Call of Duty Next event, Treyarch unveiled the first glimpse of MW3 Zombies. Fan reactions quickly circulated with many expressing their disappointment in what they described as a “painfully boring” experience, especially after the initial hype generated by the event.

Below CharieIntel’s X post sharing gameplay of the mode, a user commented “I don’t think I’ve ever seen something shed its identity and lose quite literally everything that made it special more efficiently than Zombies.”

Another user straightforwardly pleaded, “Just bring back old zombies please!!,” while another chimed in, “Imagine having one of the best formulas ever for a game mode such as round-based zombies and turning it into this…HUGE L.”

Even popular YouTuber WILDCAT couldn’t hide his sarcasm and said, “Omg shooting zombies in a giant open field. Exactly what we’ve all been wanting,” expressing his dissatisfaction with the shift to an open-world approach.

Outbreak Zombies in BOCW
Open-world Zombies first arrived with Outbreak in Treyarch’s Black Ops Cold War.

“Round-based Zombies on a small map… We don’t ask for much,” another player stated capturing the CoD Zombie community’s feeling after the initial glimpse of MW3’s version.

Since there’s no early access period to test out the upcoming Zombies mode, fans will need to purchase the entire game to try it out and determine whether they like it or not.
