CoD Vanguard will be ditching the traditional round-based experience of CoD Zombies in ‘Der Anfang’ but Treyarch have promised players that round-based maps haven’t been forgotten.

There will be a plethora of fun new content for fans to dig into when CoD Vanguard finally releases. This includes a Campaign modemultiplayer offering, and a new take on the popular Zombies mode called Der Anfang.

This new map will be ditching the familiar round-based mode and will instead blend aspects of Outbreak and classic Zombies mode. However, the devs have reassured veteran Zombies players that they aren’t being “forgotten.”

This departure from the standard Zombies offering raised some backlash from fans, and Treyarch’s Associate Director of Design Gavin Locke defended the decision in a Gamespot interview.

“I think we stripped down the round-based experience. The ever-increasing challenge and choosing how you want to play and unlocking the map, we wanted to incorporate those elements, and then we used the objectives to be the gate,” said Locke.

Players in Vanguard’s Der Anfang will start with their own loadouts and will have to complete objectives to open up the map instead of progressing with each round.

“If Outbreak is one extreme and RBZ [round-based Zombies] is one, very directed versus very open, we’ve taken the ingredients from both and mashed them together,” Treyarch Creative Specialist Miles Leslie added.

Leslie also made it clear that Treyarch are “not forgetting round-based fans.” They’re just trying to offer something new for players to enjoy.

The Vanguard developers have stated that they want to give fans “the best of both worlds” with these new changes in Der Anfang. However, we might see the return of round-based Zombies at some point in the future.

“Round-based as you know it, might get worked into some other mechanics. That’s probably the best I can say without giving it away. They are going to be satisfied [with] some upcoming stuff that will be pretty cool, I think,” explained Leslie.

Vanguard’s Zombies mode will also come with the Altar of Covenants upgrade system. This grants you access to 32 upgrades that offer unique gameplay opportunities. We expect plenty of exciting new additions in this mode as time goes on.
