Hilarious Starfield bug turns starship into killer rogue AI

It’s common for bugs to disrupt the gameplay experience of a major title like Starfield, but on this occasion, one hilarious bug has turned a ship into sentient AI hellbent on taking out nearby ships.

Starfield players have been exploring the Colonized Systems for several weeks now, and have seen and experienced a great deal of things. However, before the release of its 1.7.33 patch, one Starfield player discovered that their starship has a mind of its own.

Reddit user RandolOrian shared this unbelievable experience with the Starfield community. In the video below, we can see their docked starship, which seems to be an Aegis class ship, one of the best ships in the game, detach itself from the docking port, as it goes rogue and starts hunting several vessels cycling around the orbital station “The Eye.”

One of the comments alluded to a popular sci-fi film: “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.” In reference to the famous phrase said by HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

This incident happened on planet Jemison, the house of the Constellation Lodge, where many of the main faction’s UC ships are present. Of course, this caused a major space incident and likely ended up brewing up some trouble for the player.

Meanwhile, other comments offered some insight about the origin of this Starfield bug: “Question, was the base ship a pirate vessel? Because a few ships I have ‘liberated’ keep their unique names. So I wonder if some process marks it as an NPC ship and that is why it flew off.”

It would make sense that the system of the game perceives commandeered ships from pirates as “autonomous NPCs.” If you happen to get one of these ships yourself, you might want to register it before you leave it on its own.

We don’t know if the origin of the bug may be caused by a rogue AI protocol, or by some poor scripting in the behavior of the NPCs (Crewmembers) aboard Reddit user Rand0lorian’s ship.
