The Water Breathing Potion allows players to breathe underwater and avoid drowning in Minecraft. Here’s how to craft the Water Breathing potion in the sandbox game.

Potions are exceptionally useful in Minecraft, as they give players access to certain abilities that help them during their time in the Minecraft world. Every potion offers a different status effect for players to test out.

The Water Breathing potion enables players to spend a certain amount of time underwater without having to worry about running out of oxygen and losing their progress. It’s extremely effective when engaging in underwater combat with hostile mobs like Drowned, Guardians, and Elder Guardians.

Here’s how you can brew a Water Breathing Potion in Minecraft.

Minecraft: How to breathe underwater using Potion of Water Breathing

Minecraft players will require the following materials to brew a Potion of Water Breathing:

  • Brewing Stand
  • Pufferfish
  • Awkward Potion

Here’s how to obtain every crafting ingredient for a Water Breathing potion:

How to obtain a Brewing Stand in Minecraft

Minecraft players can make a Brewing Stand using three cobblestone blocks and a Blaze Rod. They can also get one from the cleric’s house in village structures that can be found around their world. Cobblestone is among the most common blocks in Minecraft, so a short mining trip will give you a large amount of the block. Blaze rods, however, are a trickier to obtain.

Blaze Rods can be obtained as drops from the Blaze mob. These are rare mobs exclusively found in the Nether realm, which will require a nether portal to enter. Once you’re inside the Nether dimension, look around until you find a Nether Fortress. They’re more common in the Soul Sand biome.

Blaze rods are the only source of Blaze powder, which is a mandatory ingredient in many different potion recipes. Therefore, it is advisable that you get a large number of rods. You must also remember to get a significant amount of Nether Wart while in the Nether. These can be found growing beside Nether Fortress staircases.

Once you get all the materials, place a crafting table and put a Blaze rod inside the middle slot of its 3×3 grid. After that, fill the bottom row with three blocks of cobblestone. This will result in a Brewing Stand being crafted.

How to obtain Pufferfish in Minecraft

Pufferfish can be caught via fishing. Players are recommended to use the “Lure” enchantment on their fishing rod, as it decreases the time required for a bite on your fishing rod. Pufferfish can also be obtained as drops from Guardian and Elder Guardian mobs, but that chance is quite low (0.325%).

How to brew an Awkward Potion

Awkward Potions are crafted using Nether Wart and Water Bottles in Minecraft. They’re used to craft several potions, so it is recommended that you store a few. As mentioned above, Nether Wart can be found in Nether Fortresses. On the other hand, Glass Bottles can be made using three glass blocks on a crafting table. Filling these bottles up with water will result in Water Bottles.

Once the ingredients are ready, place your water bottles inside the Brewing Stand slots. Next, put some blaze powder inside the “fuel” slot on the top left as well as some nether wart into the top slot. This will start the brewing process, resulting in some Awkward Potions.

Brewing recipe for Potion of Water Breathing II in Minecraft

The Potion of Water Breathing II is a superior version of the Potion of Water Breathing in Minecraft. In order to brew this potion, you’ll have to replace the Pufferfish in your Brewing Stand with redstone dust.

Redstone dust drops when a block of redstone ore is mined. You can find redstone dust between Y levels 15 and -63. However, the most profitable levels for redstone lie at Y levels -58 and -59.

Once you’ve collected enough redstone dust, you’re ready to brew a Potion of Water Breathing II.

  1. Place some redstone dust in the top slot of the Brewing Stand.
  2. Place up to three Potions of Water Breathing in the bottom slots.
  3. Place some Blaze Powder in the top-left slot.
