Minecraft developers constantly release updates with new content to keep their game fresh. If you’re someone who likes trying out the latest content, check out this guide on how to update Minecraft on all platforms including PC, console, and mobile.

Minecraft has been around for over a decade and is still one of the biggest games in the world. Constant updates have significantly contributed to the game’s glorious run as they keep it bug-free and introduce new content that keeps the player base engaged.

While some features like beds, creepers, and enchantments have been available for a long time, mobs such as foxes and axolotls arrived later with content updates.

Although Minecraft installs updates automatically if you choose that setting, it’s equally easy to check for updates manually. In this guide, we’ll cover how to update Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions on every valid platform.

How to update Minecraft on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and other major platforms

Follow these steps to update Minecraft on PC:

  1. Run the Minecraft launcher. In case you don’t have it, visit the official website to download it.
  2. The launcher should display the latest release automatically. If not, click on the arrow located at the right of the ‘Play’ button and select ‘Latest Release’.
  3. You’ll get an option to download and install the latest version of Minecraft.

Mobile (Android & iOS)

Follow these steps to update Minecraft on mobile:

  1. Open the App Store on iOS devices or the Google Play Store on Android devices.
  2. Open the list of your apps and if Minecraft has an update pending, you’ll get an option to initiate it.

Follow these steps to update Minecraft on Xbox consoles:

  1. Go to ‘My Apps and Games’.
  2. Select ‘More Options’. A list will appear.
  3. Select ‘Manage games & add-ons’ and then ‘Updates’.
  4. If there’s a Minecraft update, you’ll find it here with an option to download and install it.

Follow these steps to update Minecraft on PlayStation consoles

  1. Minecraft will be updated automatically on PlayStation consoles if you’ve selected the automatic updates settings. If not, select the game in your library and choose options.
  2. Select Check for Update.
  3. If there’s an update, you’ll get a prompt to download and install it.

Nintendo Switch

Follow these steps to update Minecraft on Nintendo Switch consoles:

  1. Launch Minecraft on your Nintendo Switch. If there’s an update, you’ll get a prompt that will redirect you to the eShop. Download and install the latest version from here.
  2. You can also visit the eShop manually and search Minecraft. In case there’s an update, you’ll get the desired options.

Do note that Minecraft Java Edition only runs on PC while Minecraft Bedrock edition is prominent among console and mobile players.
