Who is the ‘Unknown God’ in Genshin Impact? Her real name, true identity, theories
An Unknown God separates the Traveler siblings at the outset of Genshin Impact. In this article, we’ll talk about her real name, true identity, and theories claiming that Paimon is the Unknown God in Genshin Impact.
When you start playing Genshin Impact, the very first cutscene begins with a female god confronting you and your sibling. She says, “Outlanders, your journey ends here”, and separates the siblings.
This cutscene is enough to conclude that this Unknown God is not only powerful but also the key to reuniting the siblings. However, even though the Genshin Impact lore has progressed a lot in the past two years, we still don’t have any official information on this god, her identity, or her real name.
Having said that, the community is known for its brilliant theories, and here’s everything to know about the Unknown God in Genshin Impact.
Do note that this article might contain story spoilers.
The real name of the Unknown God in Genshin Impact
In the game files, the Unknown God in Genshin Impact is labeled Asmoday which is most likely her name. In the aforementioned cutscene, she also calls herself Sustainer of Heavenly Principles. As a result, many fans believe that her official name will be Asmoday, the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles.
Interestingly, all Archons in Genshin Impact are named after demons from The Lesser Key of Solomon (a grimoire on demonology), and Asmoday is no exception. Her name seems to be inspired by Asmodeus who was one of the nine Kings of Hell in the grimoire.
It is worth noting that the community often uses the name Kiana for the Unknown God. This is because her appearance is quite similar to Kiana Kaslana, Herrscher of the Void. The latter is a character from Honkai Impact 3rd, another famous game by HoYoverse/miHoYo.
Is Paimon the Unknown God in Genshin Impact?
As absurd as this sounds, many Genshin Impact theories suggest that Paimon is actually Asmoday, the Unknown God. Apparently, Paimon and the celestial being have many similarities.
Both Paimon and the Unknown God have white hair and similar outfits. There’s a possibility that the Unknown God is accompanying the Traveler as Paimon because it is clearly the best disguise and the sibling will never doubt their constant travel partner.
Even if Paimon isn’t the Unknown God, it is not far-fetched to think that she has godly abilities. She can control time (confirmed by the clock feature in the Paimon menu). Moreover, in a quest, we find out that she remembers a war that happened around 1000 years ago implying that she’s as old as some of the archons.
To make things even more intriguing, the name Paimon is inspired by a demon name. In the Ars Goetia, Paimon is the King of Hell. Archons in the action RPG like Venti (Barbatos) and Zhongli (Morax) have demon names and Paimon could be one of them as well.
On top of everything, we know literally nothing about Paimon’s origin apart from the fact that the Traveler met her at the beginning of their journey in Mondstadt.
