Manor Lords: All crop types explained

In Manor Lords, you’ll find four crop types that you can grow with the Farmhouse building. These crops can later be refined to obtain other resources:

  • Emmer (wheat): Can be processed to Grain or Flour to make Bread at a Bakery.
  • Barley: Required to brew Ale in Taverns.
  • Flax: Can be turned into Linen to make Clothes/Gambesons at the Weaver Workshop building.
  • Rye: Similar to Wheat, it can be turned into Grain to make Flour. It can only be unlocked with the Rye Cultivation upgrade in the town development tree.

What is Emmer Fertility in Manor Lords? Soil fertility explained

Checking soil fertility in Manor Lords is crucial to establishing which crops will grow best in your terrain. For example, Emmer fertility will represent where the ground is most fertile for planting wheat.

To check if the ground is fertile for your crop, you’ll need to build a Field. When choosing a spot, you can click on the fertility filter options (right side of the screen) to see which of the spots will give you better crop production. You can check these filters for Emmer, Flax, Barley, and Rye Fertility.

The best spots will be shown in green, while you’ll see the low fertility areas in orange or red. If you spot a plus symbol, that means that the area is particularly fertile for a type of crop.

If you haven’t enough fertile areas around your terrain, you might consider using a Trading Post to get the crops you need.

Manor Lords: What is crop rotation?

Crop rotation in Manor Lords is key, as it will help you keep the fertility of the soil. Some crops, like barley, can quickly deplete the nutrients from the soil, which means that you’ll need to alternate between barley and emmer to help the land recover.

It would be best if you kept an eye out for the fertilization percentage, which will track how quickly your crop will grow. With higher percentages, you can be sure your crops will be growing faster, while lower percentages mean that they’ll grow slowly.

You can recover the fertility of a spot by letting the land to Fallow, which means that you’re not producing anything and letting the land rest between production.

Best development points for farming in Manor Lords

When you increase your settlement level in Manor Lords, you’ll get development points that can be used in the town development tree. Here are the upgrades you should unlock for your farms:

  • Heavy Plow: This is the first one you should upgrade, as plowing by hand will take longer. Heavy Plow will add Plowing Stations to deploy oxen for plowing fields and transporting crops to storage.
  • Rye Cultivation: Unlocking this will give you access to the Rye crop, which can be grown in places with lower fertility. This can also be processed to make Flour.
  • Fertilization upgrade: This upgrade will let you turn unused fields into pastures, which will improve the rate fertility is restored.

Keep in mind that your domain will need to develop other options besides farming to sustain itself. If you aren’t able to produce all crops, developing Trade Logistics or Better Deals can help you upkeep your region without only relying on your crop production.
