Star Wars Outlaws release date, gameplay, platforms & editions

After the success of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in 2023, the Star Wars universe is expanding with the highly-anticipated Star Wars Outlaws in 2024. Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment will introduce fans to a new story, characters, and more in an open-world environment.

Here’s everything you need to know about Star Wars Outlaws, including the release date, platforms, gameplay details, and more.

Star Wars Outlaws release date

Star Wars Outlaws will be released on August 30, 2024, as confirmed by Ubisoft.

Additionally, players who pre-order the Gold or Ultimate Edition will have access to the game up to three days before the worldwide release.

Star Wars Outlaws platforms

Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws is set to launch on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Last-gen consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are left out of the release for this new title in the Star Wars franchise. It will also not be on Xbox Game Pass, but it will be available for players who have Ubisoft+.

Star Wars Outlaws will have three editions, Standard, Gold, and Ultimate, which can now be pre-ordered in the Ubisoft store or your platform’s store. Here are all the editions of Star Wars Outlaws and their prices:

Story

Star Wars Outlaws is set in the period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Players will get to step into the shoes of rogue Kay Vess, the game’s main character. Along with her sidekick, Nix, she will fight her way through crime syndicates and attempt to pull off a bold heist.

During the game, you’ll meet new characters such as Jaylen, who the well-known Han Solo inspires. Not only that, but you’ll also encounter familiar beasts and droids from the Star Wars franchise, such as Rancors, AT-ST, and IG-11 combat droids.

The game is set between 3 ABY (After Battle of Yavin) and 4 ABY, which places it between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Gameplay details

Star Wars Outlaws will be a third-person shooter set in an open-world. Gameplay reveals have shown that you’ll have a Speeder to traverse the world, a ton of different weapons to choose from, and even binoculars that help you identify enemies to sneak up on them.

Since you’ll be traversing hidden caves and other areas where you need to cross canyons, you’ll also have a grappling hook at your disposal – reminiscent of the one Lara Croft uses in Rise of the Tomb Raider. To further aid your exploration, Nix also has a sonar ability to locate interesting things to pick up.

Nix’s help doesn’t end there, because the sonar lets you see enemies around you to facilitate a sneak attack. He’ll also jump on their heads to distract them while you make your way to them.

Weapons will also have alternate fire modes that you can use to break through rocks and do extra damage to your enemies. Environments also have a range of explosive barrels and traps you can use to hurt enemies and make your way through dense areas a little easier.

You’ll also have a Trailblazer ship that you can upgrade, customize, and fight with while you’re traversing space.

Character creation & customization

You won’t be able to create or change characters in Star Wars Outlaws, as it’s a set story with a named protagonist, but Kay Vess will be customizable.

There are a range of different outfits available for Kay Vess which can give you certain buffs and abilities. It’s not yet clear if Nix will have customization options, but there are some pretty big plans to change your ship.

One of the first quests that has been revealed is one to get a turret for the Trailblazer, which indicates that more upgrades will be possible for your ship the more you progress.
