Call of Duty: Zombies is well-known for its complex Easter Eggs for players to complete, and Treyarch has explained why they are easier in Black Ops Cold War.

Black Ops Cold War Zombies’ maps have complex Easter Eggs that progress the overarching Zombies story. There are some mini Easter Eggs, like Die Maschine’s Coffin Dance, and for completing Firebase Z’s main quest, we received a teaser for the now released Outbreak mode and caught up with Samantha Maxis, who will be playable in Cold War and Warzone in Season 2.

However, these Easter Eggs are a far cry from the complex missions Zombies players completed in previous titles. In an interview with IGN India, Treyarch’s Studio Creative Director Corky Lehmkuhl, explained why Zombies Easter Eggs have been made easier for Black Ops Cold War.

While it takes players hours and hours to complete these Easter Eggs, the development time will be unimaginably long. As Lehmkuhl told IGN, “less than two percent of the players were actually seeing that stuff unless it was shown on Youtube.”

With how much effort goes into these Easter Eggs, with Black Ops Cold War, developers wanted more people to experience the quests first-hand. To do this, Treyarch has simplified the steps to keep them challenging, but make them more accessible.

“On this project, we’ve actually made it a mission to make Easter Eggs more accessible or what we call ‘the main quest’,” Lehmkuhl explained. “There are some side Easter Eggs that are still somewhat obscure and you’ll have to find, but for the main quest we just wanted more players to experience it.”

Their mission to make the main storyline more accessible seems to be working. Lehmkuhl described how “if you look at Youtube now or Reddit, a lot of people are completing their first Easter Eggs, ever – and they’ve been with the franchise for the full ten, twelve years.”

“So yes, we’ve definitely made it a priority to make Easter Eggs less obscure and make sure the steps make sense with the narrative. They’re still challenging, but they’re not crazy hard like they used to be.”

Outbreak’s main Easter Egg hasn’t been included yet, but devs are hard at work getting Easter Eggs and a variety of side quests ready for the mode.
