Shadowheart is a Half-Elf Cleric companion

Shadowheart has a complex and contradictory personality. As a Cleric of Shar, she values secrets greatly. So to gain her approval, you shouldn’t keep prodding her about things she doesn’t want to talk about. However, contrary to most Shar devotees, she approves of altruistic behavior and hates needless cruelty. Meanwhile, as a Trickery Domain Cleric, she also prefers guile over brute force.

She also doesn’t like Lae’zel at all, which is made obvious in the prologue section. As such, she is opposed to siding with Lae’zel or pursuing her quests. Persuasion, Deception, Religion, and Insight checks all account for many of her approval events. In fact, you need to succeed in many Insight checks to gain approval, failing which will instead decrease her approval rating.

Act 1

You must first get to a certain level of approval with Shadowheart in order to romance her in Act 1. You also need to advance the main plot of Baldur’s Gate 3 a bit. The Druid’s Grove questline must be finished with the ending where you save Halsin and the refugees. Then, take a Long Rest at your campsite.

The refugees will throw a party at the camp, during which you can approach Shadowheart to start a conversation. Here, you will need to choose the following dialogue options:

  • Tieflings?
  • Are you worried Shar won’t approve?
  • I’d be glad to. (when she asks to share a bottle)
  • I’ll find you after everyone’s turned in for the night.

You should then return to your bedroll and use it to go to bed with Shadowheart. This will start a cutscene with her on the cliffside where you’ll have another conversation. You can choose anything here as the choices won’t hamper your relationship in any way. This culminates in your character spending a romantic moment with Shadowheart.

  • When you encounter a Statue of Shar, don’t choose to pray to it, as it makes Shadowheart devoted to the Lady of Loss. This can culminate in the darkest ending for Shadowheart, and your relationship with her will end as well.
  • Meanwhile, after fighting Balthazar, you get another major decision when you meet the Nightsong. Don’t let her kill the Nightsong, as it will make her a Chosen of Shar. If this happens, your relationship with her will end.
