Baldur’s Gate 3 players who enjoy a challenge have been requesting a hardcore game mode, and it might be a possibility. So here’s all you need to know about a hardcore permadeath mode in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 allows you to enjoy D&D’s tabletop roleplaying in a video-game format. You can customize your own character, and choose from different backgrounds, races, classes, and more. You can also choose how you want to experience the Forgotten Realms by picking from several difficulty options.

If you want it easy, there’s Explorer mode, while a regular playthrough would be in Balanced mode. There’s also a more difficult option called Tactician mode which makes every combat encounter a challenge and forces you to plan everything in advance. However, no matter the difficulty, you can always reload an earlier save to take a different approach if things go wrong.

In Larian’s previous RPG, Divinity: Original Sin II (DOS2), there was a feature that took away this safety net. Called “Honour mode,” it was essentially the equivalent of an Ironman mode featured in many other games, making death permanent and forcing you to start from the beginning.

So, does Larian’s latest RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, also have this hardcore permadeath mode? Here’s what you should know.

Is hardcore permadeath Honour mode coming to Baldur’s Gate 3?

Baldur’s Gate 3 currently doesn’t have a hardcore permadeath game mode, but it seems like Larian might be adding one soon.

The hardest game mode forces you to think tactically before engaging in battle.

A Baldur’s Gate 3 player recently found a hidden achievement in the GOG version of the game after the latest patch. The achievement is simply called “Foehammer” and according to its description, you unlock it after beating the game in “Honour mode.”

As mentioned before, Honour mode is the hardest game mode in DOS2 that restricts you to one save slot and deletes your saves when your party is wiped out. It also makes an autosave whenever one of your companions dies in battle. However, it should be noted that you can select this game mode irrespective of the difficulty you set.

Unlike Baldur’s Gate 3, DOS2 had four difficulty settings — Story, Explorer, Classic, and Tactician. So, if you want the most challenging experience in DOS2, you’ll have to pick Tactician mode along with Honour mode. Larian has yet to confirm if Honour mode will be added to Baldur’s Gate 3, but when they do, we’ll be sure to update you.
