A mech in Starfield

Starfield features detailed models of transportation objects like rovers and mechs but these can not be operated in the game. Fortunately, a modder has taken it upon themselves to add pilotable mechs to Starfield.

The lack of quick and varied methods of transportation is one of the biggest complaints levied against Starfield. Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG is packed with planets to explore and locations to discover but the process can be pretty sluggish due to the absence of faster ways to travel.

Hopping from one planet to another is done through loading screens but traversing the planet itself can only be done on foot. Players can utilize boost packs to speed things up although the item can only be used for a few seconds before requiring a cooldown. This results in planetary exploration becoming tedious after a while, and it is something that players have frequently complained about.

Bethesda have already announced that the game will be receiving new ways to travel in future updates, but that hasn’t stopped modders from implementing new features manually. A modder by the name of ‘Jared Kohr‘ recently uploaded a YouTube video that showed off a pilotable mech in Starfield.

Mechs are a part of Starfield’s lore and you can even find multiple models spread throughout the game. These mechanized weapons were banned after the Colony War in Starfield’s universe, which is why the models present in the game are lifeless husks that cannot be operated by players.

Fans were quick to demand operational mechs just weeks after launch, and now we’ve received a first look at a pilotable mech in the game. The work-in-progress mod utilizes the ‘Vasco Mech’ mod from m150 and morphs the armor into a functional mech.

In the video, the modder showed off the mech’s movement along with a glimpse at its firepower. They went on to state that the mod is “definitely not in a playable state,” and that they’re looking for “more knowledgeable mod authors for support.” While the work is far from finished, players on Reddit were impressed with what they saw.

One user praised the modder by saying, “Bethesda needs to hire this modder.” Another user commented on how mechs are a great fit for Starfield, “This is the only means of transportation that makes sense, it fits into the world and I could totally see this being added as an official update.”

It’ll be interesting to see how this mod evolves, and whether Bethesda end up adding pilotable mechs in the future.
