Star Wars Jedi: Survivor lets players immerse themselves in the sci-fi universe like never before, but does it feature an open world to explore? Here’s everything you need to know.

When Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order arrived in 2019, it quickly established itself as one of the best video games set in George Lucas’ iconic universe of all time. It’s no surprise then that the sequel, Jedi: Survival, is being hyped as one of the biggest games of 2023.

The follow-up is set to pick up the original’s story five years later, and expand on its gameplay by introducing new fighting stances. As the game’s release draws nears, fans are wondering if Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be going down the open-world route.

Here’s everything you need to know about whether or not Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an open-world game.

Is Star Wars Jedi: Survivor open world?

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor does feature open-world gameplay, although it’s not quite the same as other games in the genre. Rather than a single huge map to explore, much like its predecessor, Survivor will be broken up into smaller maps across multiple planets.

These areas can be freely explored after you fly the Mantis to them, and there are plenty of different paths and secrets to find on your travels. Some of these will only become available when you unlock certain force abilities for Cal Kestis.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will feature open-world gameplay as well as linear sections.

You’ll be able to explore these by running, climbing, wall-running, and platforming. There is also a grappling hook that you can use to access certain areas, but it cannot be used at every location.

On top of these open areas, there will also be linear sections with tailor-made combat situations and platforming challenges. These are where the majority of the story content will be delivered.

You can find places that you didn’t know were explorable through the holographic map. There are also certain creatures that you can ride to get around the map, such as the Nekko. You can also fast travel from meditation points.

Nekko can be used to travel around the map in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

The most traditional open-world area will be the planet of Koboh, which will serve as your base of operations as you progress through the story. This will be one of the largest maps you’ll encounter during the campaign, sprawling in each direction with plenty of interesting locations and powerful bosses to track down.

There will be a variety of side quests that you can complete to help out NPCs. However, these aren’t necessary to do if you don’t want to, and they just serve as a way for you to explore more of the game’s open world.

All in all, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor looks to strike the right balance between open-world discovery and linear sections, in order to capture the wonder of exploring the Star Wars universe while still delivering a well-paced story.
