The reveal of the brand-new Pokemon Poltchageist for Scarlet and Violet has been met with mixed reactions from fans of the franchise.

The Pokemon Company teased the reveal of a new species for the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Teal Mask DLC on August 22 and it got fans hyped. With clues related to matcha tea, fans were expecting a Paldean form or a Convergent species of the popular Polteageist.

Then, the devs released a trailer on their official YouTube channel that revealed Poltchageist, a Grass/Ghost-type species that is based on Polteageist, and it looks like fans either love it or hate it, as they have interesting things to say about this new Pokemon.

Pokemon fans divided as Poltchageist is revealed

In a post shared by Serebii on X that showed the new trailer for Poltchageist, fans either brutally trolled the Pokemon or absolutely loved the design and lore of the species that is clearly influenced by Polteageist.

Fans of matcha seemed to take an instant liking to Poltchageist. One comment read, “As someone who loves matcha this is the best new Pokemon.” Another added, “I love matcha, little dude can steal my soul any day!”

Many fans appeared to adore the design and lore of the new Pokemon. One comment mentioned, “It’s so wicked and cute at the same time, I love it!”

However, a sizeable chunk of players hate the new Pokemon, with some developing a strong dislike for its design. A person wrote: “This isn’t real, right? Some kid learning photoshop did this.”

Some players found the Pokemon too basic and uncreative, with one comment reading, “Is that a… floating jar of matcha?” while another said, “All this hype for nothing? Thank goodness I expected it, nothing special.”

While the initial reception to Poltchageist shows fans being divided, they agree that Poltchageist is spooky as it steals life force away from people using its matcha powder.

In the past, many Pokemon reveals were met with similar reactions but they went on to become popular species in the game.
