Is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown a reboot or sequel?

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown sees the series return to its 2D roots, but where does it stand canonically? Here’s whether the upcoming Metroidvania installment is a sequel, a prequel, or something entirely of its own.

The very first Prince of Persia game was launched way back in 1989. It wasn’t published by Ubisoft, who later brought the IP and rebooted the series with the critically acclaimed The Sands of Time. The reboot has no connections with the original 2D platformers but has received several continuations. 

The Prince of Persia series was then, again, rebooted by Ubisoft in 2008 with an open-world entry titled Prince of Persia. The 2008 reboot also doesn’t have anything in common with either the original 2D games or The Sands of Time. 

So with the series already having several break-ups, here is whether Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a sequel or a prequel to any of the entries in the series, or another reboot. 

Is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown a sequel, prequel, or reboot? 

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown could be perceived as a prequel to The Sands of Time according to the game director, but “it’s a whole new chapter.”  

In an interview with RPS, game director Mounir Radi said, “It could be seen and perceived as a prequel, because we use some specific elements from the previous Prince of Persia games, but really it’s a whole new chapter.”

One thing Radi stressed in his interview is that The Lost Crown isn’t a “reboot,” like The Sands of Time or the 2008 Prince of Persia. So it appears The Lost Crown does take place in the same universe as The Sands of Time, but it is still independent with loose ties and shared mechanics, like time powers.
