Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

There’s no question that the original Final Fantasy 7 is one of the all-time RPG greats, so with the remake trilogy, you’re likely wanting a similar story with better visuals. However, like other franchise remakes, this isn’t always true. Here, we’ll reveal if FF7 Rebirth’s story is the same as the PS1 classic’s.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the highly anticipated sequel to the trilogy that revamps Square Enix’s iconic 1997 game. After a four-year wait since the initial release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, fans will have the opportunity to reunite with Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and Red XIII as they embark on a mission to save the world.

Although the first installment received critical acclaim, players were surprised to notice that the original story had been changed and didn’t follow exactly the same events as the original plot.

With Square Enix promising that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will receive plenty of side content for fans to explore, fans are worried that this means that the whole narrative is being rewritten. Here’s what the devs had to say about the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth story.

Is the FF7 Rebirth story the same as the original?

No, FF7 Rebirth isn’t following the exact same story as Final Fantasy 7 (1997) but does share a lot of elements. The new remade trilogy, which started with Final Fantasy 7 Remake (2020), reimagines the whole plot, world, and cast of the original title but does keep the core of what makes it enthralling.

This means that the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth story isn’t new, and it will still take into account the major plot points of the original Final Fantasy.

According to the Creative Director, Testuya Nomura, Rebirth’s narrative will span the events from leaving Midgar to the Forgotten Capital, but the order in which locations will be explored is changed and some saved for the third installment.

Nomura also described that some mini-games have also been reimagined, and Square Enix expanded what players will be able to do while trying to complete them.

And that’s everything known so far about the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth story. If you’re looking for more information on the game, check out our other guides:
