As we look forward to the monumental launch of Final Fantasy 16 in 2023, there are burning questions about whether this new behemoth from Square Enix will be storming its way onto the Steam Deck.

Final Fantasy 16 is embracing a new era for the franchise, redefining the JRPG genre with a distinctive action-forward play style. FF16 brings a unique emphasis on medieval themes of kings and knights, interlaced with those quintessential Final Fantasy motifs.

Despite the decreasing window between now and the game’s launch, several unanswered questions remain about FF16.

Square Enix has been rather elusive during the lead-up to the game’s launch, so let’s find out if Final Fantasy 16 is coming to Steam Deck.

Is Final Fantasy 16 coming to Steam Deck?

As it stands, Final Fantasy 16 is set to be a PS5 exclusive and there doesn’t appear to be any plans for a Steam Deck or PC release in the foreseeable future.

Previously, these exclusivity agreements have generally expired after a year or so. For instance, the Final Fantasy VII Remake didn’t make its PC debut until about 18 months post-launch and a further delay occurred before it landed on Steam due to the Epic Games deal extending its platform exclusivity.

Final Fantasy 16 will focus on Clive’s story as the protagonist.

Interestingly, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the rest of the series operate quite efficiently on the Steam Deck, including titles running via emulation.

To sum it up, if we go by historical patterns, the prospects of seeing FF16 on the Steam Deck might not be entirely grim, but we may have to play the waiting game.
