Baldur’s Gate 3 player goes full Durge after heartbreaking Honour Mode fail

The Dark Urge in Baldur's Gate 3

Playing as Baldur’s Gate 3’s Durge means you know what you’re getting yourself into, but sometimes the evil causes a lot of heartbreak for players.

The Dark Urge (affectionately Durge) in Baldur’s Gate 3 is an Origin character that players can choose in character selection. Durge is a Bhaalspawn created from the dead flesh of Bhaal himself.

Eventually, Durge becomes the leader of the Cult of Bhaal and pledges to end all life in existence. In-game, players will get a quest named ‘The Urge’ where they can choose to embrace their murderous urges or fight against them.

As we can see, Durge is not exactly your run-of-the-mill evil character who runs by their own morals. The player who chooses Durge will have to consistently fight against themselves and the enemies in-game, or if they don’t want a redemption arc, embrace the darkness of the God of Murder Bhaal.

One such player discovered that, even when you actively choose to embrace The Urge, it can backfire horrifically. Redditor ‘TheDima725’ shared their experience in a post. Simply put, they were running a Durge playthrough where they succumbed to their darker desires. Howerver, this changed when it came to turning Shadowheart away from Shar.

“I didn’t want to let Shadowheart do it. I thought that doesn’t matter if this is Honour Mode, I’m still enjoying so much this run, I want to do what I want to do, and what is best for my characters,” they said.

Saving the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3, which is necessary for saving Shadowheart from Shar, means that Isobel survives. When you are doing a Durge run, this means that Scleritas Fel – the dread butler of The Dark Urge – will pay you a visit and try to convince you to kill your love interest.

“I went to bed without equipping any sort of Wisdom Advantage amulet, or WIS spell prepared, scrolls.. Anything,” the OP continued. “That f***r, Sceleritas, visited me. He told me that I would kill Lae’zel (my partner). I told him that I would not kill anyone. I tried to wake Lae’zel up. My hands went for her neck, I just had to pass a 14DC Wisdom saving throw.”

“I look at my character killing her lover, and sobbing over her corpse. I pause for some minutes, try to compose myself and accept what happened,” they said.

After killing Lae’zel, the rest of the party attacked the player and all of them were killed.

“First thing I did after leaving the camp was killing Isobel. Nobody will remain alive, they took everything from me, I will destroy everyone in return.”

Fans responded with sympathy to the OP, and the story was definitely one of the sadder ones to come out of Baldur’s Gate 3. There was, however, an overwhelming opinion that it was one of the best roleplaying stories they had ever heard.
