Baldur’s Gate 3 gives players a good variety of companions they can add to their party, but that doesn’t mean all of them get the same play time.

Companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 each have strengths that play well into combat. Especially when playing a custom character, players find that they have a lot of variety when it comes to how they build their party.

Not all companions get the same treatment, though. Some are used more than others – especially if they fit in better with the player’s build. This doesn’t only apply to combat: If a character is more evil-aligned, it could harm the story and your relationship with them if you take them with you more often on a ‘good’ playthrough.

As such, the reasons for players not using some companions as often as others range from them just not fitting well into combat to the story not calling for them at the time. In a thread titled ‘What companion/s do you recruit but never add to your party?’ on Reddit, it became evident that some characters work better than others.

Most fans pointed out that you get Minsc way too late in the game to have any attachment or use for him, and as a result, they hardly ever used him. Players explained that at the point in Act 3 where you get him, your relationships with the other companions are much stronger.

“The worst is Minsc imo,” a Baldur’s Gate 3 player explained. “He has zero quest/lore material and just there to play the role of Jaheira’s boyfriend.”

Interestingly, it was overwhelmingly clear that a lot of fans decided to leave Halsin and Wyll behind more often. The reasons ranged from them playing Warlock themselves and liking Jaheira in place of the Archdruid to just not resonating with their characters. Nonetheless, their names were mentioned in the thread the most aside from Minsc.

“Halsin. He kept flirting and insisted that I showed him the kindness of a lover and not a friend. That completely turned me away from him. I know it’s not his fault, since all the characters are programmed to become insatiably player-h***y if your approval is high enough, but it was just especially weird with him,” one player commented.

While some players did make an effort to give all companions the time of day, some were clear favorites over others. Astarion, Shadowheart, Lae’zel, and Gale were among some of the top picks overall.
