The Duke of Ravengard in Baldur's Gate 3

One of the most pivotal moments in Baldur’s Gate 3 is when Wyll has to choose to save the Duke of Ravengard or sacrifice his life for freedom. You don’t need to have it one way or the other, though, so here is how to save the Duke of Ravengard without Mizora’s help.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has quite a few poignant moments, but not many hit as hard as when Wyll needs to make a choice between saving his father, the Duke of Ravengard, either by pledging his soul to Mizora forever or leaving him to die for freedom.

While the game makes it seem that the Duke of Ravengard will die if you don’t pledge your soul to Mizora, this is not entirely true – you can still give Wyll his freedom and save his father.

There are some steps you need to follow, including making sure you have Wyll in your party and are following his quest. Here is everything you need to know about saving the Duke of Ravengard without Mizora’s help.

How to find the Duke of Ravengard in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 players can follow Wyll’s quest to save the Duke of Ravengard from the Iron Throne.

Mizora will present Wyll with a choice after you meet her in Wyrm’s Fortress.

The Iron Throne is a secret underwater prison constructed by Gortash, and it is also where the Duke of Ravengard is held prisoner in Act 3. You need to save him from it, but as Mizora warns you, it might be a difficult challenge without her help.

After you meet with Gortash in Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, you need to speak with Mizora before continuing into the Lower City. She will tell you that Wyll’s father has been taken captive, and she knows where he is.

When you take a long rest, Mizora will appear in your camp and present Wyll with a deal. Either he signs his soul to her forever and she helps save his father, or he chooses freedom and likely leaves his father to die.

If you want to save the Duke of Ravengard without Mizora’s help, you will need to choose freedom for Wyll. Otherwise, she will help you in The Iron Throne and Wyll will have signed his soul over to the devil.

Make sure you resolve this part of the quest before you head to the Iron Throne. If you don’t, the Duke of Ravengard will already be dead when you reach the prison.

How to reach The Iron Throne in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 players can get to The Iron Throne by convincing Redhammer the Deviser to take you there.

You need to convince Redhammer the Deviser to take you to The Iron Throne.

Step by step, here is how you can reach The Iron Throne:

  1. Head to Flymm Cargo at the South end of Baldur’s Gate.
  2. Lockpick the door and head inside.
  3. Defeat the Wargs and find a hatch under some boxes
  4. Enter the hatch and follow the path straight until you reach a large open room.
  5. Approach Redhammer the Deviser and convince him to take you to The Iron Throne

Take note that if you want to stay on Gortash’s good side, you can’t go to the Iron Throne otherwise your deal with him will immediately be null and void. Otherwise, you will have six turns to make sure the Duke gets out of there safely.

How to save the Duke of Ravengard in Baldur’s Gate 3 without Mizora

To save the Duke of Ravengard in Baldur’s Gate 3 without Mizora’s help, you need to make sure you kill the enemies she spawns before they can reach him

The Duke of Ravengard can be found in the central prison cell in the room East of the Iron Throne. You can open his cell by pulling the lever next to it, and it doesn’t cost an action either.

Be warned that once he is released, he will only have a sliver of health and will be targeted by the enemies around you. Mizora will also appear here and spawn six Combustion Belly Spiderlings that will run toward the Duke and explode. Make sure you kill them, and you should be fine the rest of the way.

You can pull the levers to release prisoners without it costing an action.

Here are some tips to keep in mind while you are in The Iron Throne:

  • Use Dash, Freedom of Movement, and other spells that speed you up as much as possible.
  • Make sure you also free others who are trapped in The Iron Throne
  • You only need one party member to make it back to the submersible
  • Heal the Duke up and protect him as a priority.

The Iron Throne is closely linked with the Save the Gondians quest, so while you are here, make sure you save as many prisoners as you can from the other cells. The easiest way to do this is to split your party and send them in different directions.

Only one of your party members needs to make it back to the submersible to successfully complete the quest, so don’t stress too much if everyone doesn’t make it back. You can find the rest of your party members washed up on the beach where you can resurrect them.

That’s everything to know about saving the Duke without Mizora’s help. If you want to know more about Baldur’s Gate 3, you can check out some of our other guides below.
