Pokemon Go players fear update 0.289.0 could kill auto-catcher feature

A new Android Update could be the end of Pokemon Go auto-catchers, and trainers are worried about finding a solution for this before it’s too late. Here’s what the community has been discussing about it.

For Pokemon Go players, having an auto-catcher can be a significant advantage, more so for those trainers that can only play on-the-go to their workplaces or traveling back home. But now, a new Android update can jeopardize the future of auto-catcher users.

According to certain users, if your phone has Android 13 or higher and you use an auto-catcher, you shouldn’t update to the 0.289.0 version and instead stall with an earlier version until the update is forced.

Reddit user ‘Luke9251’ posted a warning about version 0.289 making Pokemon Go+ and Go Plus not working properly anymore after the update. According to this player, the update made it impossible for Pokemon Go to recognize the auto catcher while the game is running in the background, as it is intended to work:

“I updated this morning and as people have reported, it finally fixed the notification issues that appeared on certain Android devices. However, I noticed this now broke my Go+. There no longer are notifications from the Go+ and it completely stops working in the background (doesn’t matter if I just minimize the app or fully lock my phone). The app now always needs to be in the foreground for the Go+ to function.”

The player asked other users if they had the same issue, and several of them went to check with theirs, only to discover that, effectively, the update had ruined the compatibility between devices.

Then, Reddit user ‘InvisibleSou8’ offered a temporary solution for this issue, which involves stalling your Android update (version 0.287.0) for as long as possible while Niantic addresses the issue. However, it is unlikely that the company will come up with a solution anytime soon.

“TL;DR is on phones running Android 13 or above, autocatchers stop working if the game is put into the background and/or the screen is turned off. Would recommend not updating from 0.287 until 0.289 is forced upon you.”

Clearly, now that the update is being rolled out, more and more Pokemon Go players will be soon affected by this issue. We will keep you informed in case Niantic comments on the subject or offers a solution to this problem.
