How to catch Mewtwo in Pokemon Go
The best way to catch Mewtwo in Pokemon Go is by winning 5-Star Raid battles when it is the Raid Boss. This Legendary Pokemon is not currently available in Raid battles but we will provide an update once it is back.
Beating Mewtwo in a Raid is as difficult as it sounds. You need to team up with several players and use your best Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type Pokemon, as these types are strong against Psychic-type Pokemon.
The difficulty of a Tier 5 Mewtwo Raid can be overwhelming for two players. It is best to take on such a challenge in the game with at least three to five high-leveled players.
After the battle, you’ll get a limited number of Premier Balls. Make the most of them by making Great and Excellent Throws, as they increase the chances of catching the Pokemon. Using Razz, Golden Razz, and Silver Pinap berries can also ease the process.
Can you trade a Mewtwo in Pokemon Go?
Yes, you can use trading to get yourself a Mewtwo in Pokemon Go. However, the cost of trading a Legendary Pokemon can be outrageous. It is lower if the person receiving the Mewtwo already has it registered on their Pokedex.
This chart reveals the Stardust required to trade a Legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Go:
Friends type | Stardust needed for registered Legendary Pokemon | Stardust needed for new Legendary Pokemon |
---|---|---|
Good Friends | 20,000 | 1,000,000 |
Great Friends | 16,000 | 800,000 |
Ultra Friends | 1,600 | 80,000 |
Best Friends | 800 | 40,000 |
How to catch a shiny Mewtwo in Pokemon Go
If you’re lucky enough, you might get a chance at catching Shiny Mewtwo in Pokemon Go after beating it in a Tier 5 raid. A shiny Mewtwo has a green tail instead of purple.
Shiny Pokemon do not guarantee better IVs or attacks. They are different only visually and are sought-after because of their extremely low spawn rate.
Do note that shiny Legendary Pokemon that you encounter in Raids are a guaranteed catch. There’s no use in spending Razz Berries, so you should use Pinap or Silver Pinap Berries to get more Candy.

How to catch Shadow Mewtwo in Pokemon Go
You cannot get a Shadow Mewtwo at the moment because none of the Team Go Rocket leaders has it in their lineup.
Back in 2021, Giovanni was using a Mewtwo and players had to complete a special research called An Inter-egg-sting Development to face the Team Go Rocket leader and catch it. In May 2023, the Rising Shadows event also brought Shadow Mewtwo back for a limited time. So we expect a popular Pokemon like Mewtwo to be eventually back in the game,
All in all, Pokemon Go players will have to patiently wait for the return of Mewtwo in 5-Star Raids and Giovanni’s lineup to catch its standard, shiny, and Shadow variants. We’ll update this article whenever such an event arrives.
