A Pokemon Go player has left fans in disbelief after showcasing a Gym Defender glitch that they joked is a “new record” in the popular mobile game.

Pokemon Go players can get free PokeCoins by placing their Pokemon in Gyms, getting 50 PokeCoins if the species defends the Gym for at least eight hours and 20 minutes.

So regardless of whether the Gym Defender is back to the trainer after one day or even years, they would still get the same 50 PokeCoins on a single day.

Still, fans try to keep as many Pokemon as they can in Gyms for a while so that they can have a high chance of getting more PokeCoins, letting them purchase useful items from the in-game store.

But when a player added their shiny to a Gym, they were in for a shock when they viewed the status of the species defending the Gym.

The trainer, named ‘ItsDanaMarie13’ on Reddit, posted a screengrab of their shiny Tyranitar in a Gym and wrote: “When will my grandfather return from war” while adding: “My game glitched today, a Tyranitar I added to a gym this morning has now been defending for over 54 years.”

The post caught the attention of several Pokemon Go players who couldn’t help but find the unbelievable glitch “funny.”

Users joked: “54 years deserves at least 54 coins” and, “[Where] is he defending the gym? The moon?”

Alongside the hilarity that sparked in the comments section, a few users had some relevant queries. They asked: “Do you get the gold badge right away if this happens?” as well as, “Did you get the rewards for defending a gym for that long?”

The OP answered “no” to both questions, before adding: “Nope it was probably only a glitch on the specific screen.”

Surprisingly, it looks like some other players have also experienced the same glitch as one stated: “I’ve had a similar bug happen to me, it was a Blissey that “defended the gym for 19514 days 08 hours, 47 minutes & 09 seconds.”

To this, a trainer added: “Every time this bug happens it is the new record” while another commented: “Apparently this bug happens often. I’m curious if there’s been one longer than 54 years though.”

Though this “record” is just a glitch and the OP would still get the usual Gym reward, it is undoubtedly fun to experience.
