Castle Sol in Elden Ring

Castle Sol is among the most difficult dungeon-style locations in Elden Ring. It houses a very pesky boss fight along with an item required to unlock a secret area. On that note, here’s what you need to know about Castle Sol in Elden Ring, including its location and all the items to find.

Elden Ring is a massive RPG that is going to get even bigger with the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The base game already boasts an impressive variety of locations, ranging from Legacy Dungeons to small POIs, and many distinct biomes. A majority of these locations manage to be memorable, be it because of the final reward or the boss fight that came before it.

Castle Sol is one such location, as it houses an item of great importance alongside an infamous boss fight that can be surprisingly difficult. With this in mind, here’s what you need to know about Castle Sol in Elden Ring, including its location, items, boss fight, and more.

You’ll meet difficult enemies along the way, including a dangerous boss fight in the form of the Death Rite Bird. You can choose to skip combat entirely and just gallop straight to the castle if you’re looking to save time.

Elden Ring: Castle Sol boss fight guide

The main boss fight inside Castle Sol in Elden Ring will see you take on Commander Niall. While he isn’t exactly the most intimidating foe you can find in the game, the veteran warrior has some powerful attacks and can quickly leap in your direction if you attempt to create space.

Commander Niall in Elden Ring
Commander Niall’s second phase can be tricky for even high-level players.

At the start of the fight, Commander Niall summons two Banished Knights, which can be difficult to take down. As such, we suggest summoning a tanky spirit and using the Bewitching Branch to turn one of the knights into an ally. Once both knights are defeated, Niall enters phase 2 and begins to hunt you down.

His attacks include a devastating three-hit Halbred combo, and frostbite attacks like the Whirlwind Dash. The boss can also close distances quickly by using Storm Kick, which sees him leap in your direction and release a lightning shockwave.

To defeat him, you’ll need to nail down the dodge timings to evade his attacks. If you’re able to punish him consistently enough, you can break his stance and inflict a critical hit. It’s also worth using ranged weapons during the first phase while he’s distracted by the bewitched knight and your summoned spirit.

Defeating Commander Niall will reward you with 90,000 Runes and the Veteran’s Prosthesis weapon.
