Activision made an official announcement that the beloved Warzone Caldera servers will shut down permanently. Warzone Caldera has been an important part of the Call of Duty franchise since its inception, with ties to Modern Warfare (2019), Black Ops Cold War, and Vanguard.

When Activision announced the launch of Warzone 2 alongside Modern Warfare 2, many players wondered what would become of Warzone Caldera. After all, Warzone Caldera and its predecessor kicked off the Call of Duty battle royale craze.

With Warzone 2 having taken the baton since its launch in November 2022, Caldera continued to entertain a dedicated player base. Nonetheless, Activision have made the decision to permanently shut down the Warzone Caldera servers, so here’s what you need to know.

When will Warzone Caldera servers shut down?

Activision announced that Warzone Caldera servers will shut down on September 21, 2023.

“As Warzone moves ahead with exciting new experiences to come, Warzone Caldera will shut down on September 21, 2023. All Caldera gameplay, player progression, inventories and online services will expire on that date.”

This decision to shut down the original Warzone servers will likely stir emotions within the community that grew to love the Caldera map, even if it wasn’t universally acclaimed.

Unfortunately, players will no longer have access to skins and weapons they purchased or earned on Warzone Caldera once the shutdown takes effect.

These items, while still accessible in the main titles of Modern Warfare 2019, Black Ops Cold War, and Vanguard, will be unavailable in Warzone: “Regarding purchased content in Warzone Caldera – from Modern Warfare (2019), Black Ops Cold War, or Vanguard – that will continue to be accessible in those specific games.”

Interestingly, in March 2023, we saw a resurgence of professional players and content creators returning to Warzone Caldera, expressing their enjoyment of the map’s intricate movement and challenging skill gap. This rally, however, was short-lived as the introduction of Seasons 3 Reloaded and Warzone 2 Ranked Play managed to reel these players back in.
