Although being designed as a “next-gen” experience for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Battlefield 2021 is also confirmed to release on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Since EA and DICE confirmed that Battlefield 6 will be “brought to life with the power of next-gen consoles and PCs,” many believed that the game would only arrive on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. However, in their most recent investors call, EA clarified the situation.

In their investor earnings call of May 11, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson said, “So yes, Battlefield will be available for both current-gen and next-gen as will our sports titles.”

EA further clarified what the game being built for next-gen will entail. “The reference specifically from our prepared remarks was around the nature of gameplay,” explained Wilson. “What we can do with fidelity of the game, what we can do with physics, artificial intelligence and the immersive nature of the game, and in the case of Battlefield, what we can do with respect to the amount of players that we can have in the game.

“The nature of destruction in those Only In Battlefield moments that are truly next-gen opportunities that we’re able to do in the context of our next-gen franchises because of the increased processing power and memory and output of the new consoles.”

Battlefield 4

So those unable to get their hands on these rare new consoles can still play Battlefield 6, although since the game is designed for next-gen, it may be a stripped-back version similar to Battlefield 4’s release on both the PS3 and PS4.

The game is also slated to arrive on Xbox Game Pass, so perhaps those playing Battlefield on an Xbox One will get a free upgrade when they move onto the next generation of console.

A ton of information has been leaked surrounding the reveal trailer, which is now slated for June, so we’re likely to know more about Battlefield 6’s next-gen capabilities then.
