There are a few Baldur’s Gate 3 spells that don’t necessarily help you in combat, but players think are essential for the optimal playthrough. Speak with Animals is one such spell, and fans have explained why.

Speak with Animals in Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you, well, speak with creatures in Faerun. For a lot of Classes, the spell is included in your character spell list and you can cast it as a free action once a day. It lasts until a long rest.

Warlock, Ranger, Bard, Oath of Ancient Paladin, Druid and Wildheart Barbarian are Classes and Sub-Classes that allow Speak with Animals. Otherwise, you can get a potion to drink that allows you to do the same thing.

In a Reddit post titled “A small thing that irks you if you don’t do it?” players said that they always tend to make sure that they are able to cast Speak with Animals in Baldur’s Gate 3. Whether it be through a Class choice or the potion, they always have it available.

“In my current play through I have about 35 in my inventory. I am in Act 3 and almost ready to start heading towards the endgame quests, I do not need 35 potions of SWA in my inventory. Will I get rid of them? Ha! Nope,” one player explained.

Besides the obvious reasons that it’s awesome to be able to speak with animals, especially the cats – which are a fan-favorite, being able to do so can actually give you information on quests and characters you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

As another player said, “Speak With Animals? Excellent! Don’t mind if I stop and speak to every single one!

For example, Gale’s cat Tara can give you some powerful items and more information about Gale’s backstory. If you don’t have Speak with Animals, though, this is not really possible.

To players’ delight, having Speak with Animals also gives you the opportunity to have conversations with everyone’s favorite companions; Scratch and the Owlbear Cub.
