A Baldur’s Gate 3 modder has made a custom save with the in-game companions looking like The Lord of the Rings characters. This was made possible with two different mods, and it even accounts for the Guardian’s appearances.

The Lord of the Rings has had a profound impact on fantasy RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, which Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on. Which is why you’ll often find LoTR mods for almost all popular RPG games.

Now, a modder named ‘nexus1118’ has bridged the gap between LoTR and D&D by adding the entire Fellowship of the Ring to Baldur’s Gate 3. You can now embark on your Sword Coast adventure with the LoTR characters as your companions. They made it with the help of two existing mods — Party Limit Begone and Appearance Edit.

The former allows you to have up to 16 companions in your party while in single-player. Do note that this is reduced to 8 players in co-op multiplayer. Meanwhile, the latter mod allows you to change the physical features of your companions.

The author also explained the difficult process he had to undergo to make the custom save. “I had to boot 8 copies of the game window in potato mode while logged out of Steam to get the first 8, then swapped to single player (the mod allows 16 in SP) and recruited Gale and changed his appearance to be close to Gandalf.”

The save transforms existing Baldur’s Gate 3 companions such as Shadowheart, Lae’zel, and Astarion to closely resemble a Fellowship member. “The classes and appearances are as close as I could get to the movie with BG3’s limited vanilla character creator.”

They also made the Guardians for these Origin characters to match LoTR lore in Baldur’s Gate 3. “Bilbo for the hobbits, Galadriel for Gimli, Arwen for Aragorn, Denethor for Boromir, Thranduil for Legolas, and some Valar looking high elf for Gandalf.”

Party Limit Begone allows you to have the entire Fellowship in your party.

The save will place your party right outside Druid Grove, near the Sigil Circle, with Wyll yet to be introduced. The difficulty has been set to Tactician as “everything is easy with 9 characters,” according to the modder. Check the mod out on the Nexus Mods page here.

Always make up a backup of your existing saves before using any mod or custom save for Baldur’s Gate 3. Also note the known bugs and issues that the modder has listed, which are due to the Party Limit Begone.
