The May 27 update for Call of Duty: Warzone brought plenty of changes to the battle royale game, including a second major nerf to the popular CR-56 AMAX Assault Rifle.

The CR-56 AMAX Assault Rifle has been one of the best weapons in Warzone following its addition into the Call of Duty Battle Royale during the Modern Warfare cycle. It has continued to be a top-tier pick for loadouts during the Black Ops Cold War cycle.

Seeing this Assault Rifle dominate at a large scale, Raven Software applied a nerf to this weapon near the beginning of Season 3. However, this first nerf did not stop the weapon from still being the dominant weapon it had been, which lead to a second Warzone AMAX nerf to take place in the May 27, 2021 update patch notes.

This second Warzone AMAX nerf accompanied a significant change to the spawn rates of Big Bertha trucks in Solos and focused on the weapon’s headshot multiplier. This Modern Warfare Assault Rifle excelled at downing enemies when players landed headshots to an extreme degree, which lead Raven Software to explain why it had decreased the headshot multiplier from 1.62 to 1.5.

“The CR-56 AMAX has continued to display disproportionate levels of dominance over the long-range Assault Rifle space. As we continue our efforts to slowly raise the Time to Kill, we feel the best course of action here is to reduce the power level of outliers rather than increase others to meet it,” Raven Software stated in the May 27 patch notes.

“We believe it will take some time to adjust to a landscape where the CR-56 AMAX is not the undisputed king of long-range automatic weapons, but we feel this will be a net positive given how many more weapons we expect to be introduced into viability with this update,” the developer continued.

“Our hope is that this change will present players with an opportunity to showcase and expand their mastery over a multitude of weapons that had been outclassed by the CR-56 AMAX,” Raven Software concluded.

This Warzone AMAX nerf looks to be one that will not make this Modern Warfare Assault Rifle obsolete and not worth using but will stop it from being a great deal better than other weapons in most situations in a balancing act that will be interesting to see how it plays out going forward.
