Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 player turns off Swing Assist & learns a hard lesson

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has finally arrived, letting players swing and glide around more of New York than ever before. The new Swing Assist setting gives players more control over swinging’s difficulty, but a Spider-Man 2 who turned it off accidentally recreated an iconic moment from the movie.

While Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game was praised for its characters and storytelling, fans absolutely loved the game’s fast and fluid web-swinging. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrived on the PS5 on October 20 and it brought new mechanics to improve web-swinging, including gliding with web wings and the slingshot.

It also brought the Swing Assist setting which lets players set the difficulty of the game’s traversal and even introduce fall damage. A player turned off swing assistance for the first time and accidentally recreated a moment from 2004’s Spider-Man 2 with a disastrous result.

X user ‘Barto’ shared their attempt to travel through New York without Swing Assist, and while things started off well, instead of letting go of the web to sling another, Spider-Man held on. The player kept swinging in a massive arc, resulting in Spider-Man breaking his back on the roof of a building.

Web-swinging around New York is no easy feat so perhaps we non-superpowered players should just stick with Swing Assist for now.

This fail was instantly compared to the scene in 2004’s Spider-Man 2 where Peter tries to sling a web and swing after losing his powers, and instead crashes into an ally and almost breaks his back.

The PlayStation UK X account even responded to the user, posting a gif of Tobey Maguire saying “my back” to reference the scene.

Popular account Okami Games also shared how it “feels to turn Swing Assist to zero for the first time in Spider-Man 2,” showing the classic scene where Maguire’s Spider-Man swings for the first time and crashes into a billboard.

Most players will be better off leaving Swing Assist on when playing through Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but if you’re looking for a challenge, try turning it off to see how you get on. You can also check out how to get the Raimi movie suits in the sequel.
