Avowed

Avowed is an upcoming action-packed fantasy RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, where players will need to explore the world of Eora, part of the legendary Pillars of Eternity franchise. Here’s everything confirmed so far about Avowed, including details about its story, gameplay, platforms, and more.

Obsidian Entertainment is getting ready to release Avowed, one of the most anticipated games in 2024. Adventurers will be introduced to the Living Lands, an island set in the world of Eora, where they’ll have to explore a mysterious plague that’s threatening the region.

Avowed promises to be a first-person fantasy RPG with a fast-paced combat style. To survive in Eora, players will be able to build their own loadouts, choosing between magic spells and other weapons. Here’s everything that has been confirmed so far about Avowed.

Avowed release window

During the latest Xbox Developer Direct, Obsidian Entertainment revealed that players can expect Avowed to be released sometime during this Fall.

Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming fantasy RPG was originally revealed in July 2020 during that year’s Xbox Game Showcase. Despite being several years in development, Avowed got a huge change of direction when devs chose to stick to an RPG format instead of going full multiplayer as it was originally presented.

Avowed platforms

Avowd will be released as an Xbox exclusive, meaning that it will be only available on PC and Xbox Series X|S. There is no news yet for a PlayStation or Switch release in the future.

Avowed story

Avowed introduces players to the heart of the Living Lands, a mysterious region from the world of Eora, first introduced in the Pillars of Eternity franchise.

Players will have to explore the map as envoys of Aedyr, who sends them to investigate rumors of a spreading plague that threatens to destroy the island.

Avowed gameplay

Obsidian Entertainment described Avowed as a first-person combat, exploration, and choice-based adventure. During the latest Xbox Direct, devs showed their original combat system, which mixes melee, weapons, and spell-casting powers.

“We’ve developed a flexible combat system that allows you to quickly swap from spellcasting and sharpshooting, to melee combat. We want to give you the freedom to mix and match your loadout to fit the way you want to play,” described Avowed’s Gameplay Director Gabriel Paramo.

Avowed combat system
Players will be able to build their own combat style to face the different threats in the Living Lands.

This means that players will have to make real-time decisions and switch their combat style depending on what threat they’re facing.

Avowed will also feature an option for customizable loadouts, where players will be able to equip fantasy weapons or even dual-wield wands like a “gun-slinging mage.” Obsidian Entertainment also confirmed that players’ choices will have a deep impact in every region, which will also affect the outcome of Avowed.
