Players looking forward to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can pick up an exclusive controller skin by pre-ordering the game from Amazon, but many have slammed the “disappointing” design of the reward.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth finally arrives on February 29 and it’s set to be one of the biggest releases of the year. The sequel to Remake from 2020 picks up the story of Cloud and his teammates following the events of Midgar, as they go after Sephiroth and forge a brand-new timeline.

Players have been waiting four years for the next installment and die-hard fans have already pre-ordered their copy, entitling them to a number of exclusive bonuses.

US customers who bought Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth from Amazon will receive a free skin for their DualSense, but after the company revealed what it will look like for this time, players weren’t too impressed.

Reddit user ‘BrigBain’ shared an image of the skin, which features Cloud and Sephiroth on a white background with the game logo on the touchpad.

“This Rebirth controller skin is disappointing,” said the OP, before following up in the comments: “I would’ve much preferred an actual custom controller, with maybe the iconic meteor logo on the touchpad. Maybe have the rest of the controller in black with green designs on it to symbolize the Lifestream. But this? I’ll pass.”

Plenty of other players responded to the thread, calling out the “lackluster” design and comparing it to pre-order bonuses for other Final Fantasy games.

“FF XVI gets a custom controller, skin has lore meaning, and a custom ps5 cover. FF VII gets a tacky sticker and a visibly cheap snow globe,” said one player. “If anything that merchandise is hurting the brand by associating FFVII [with] cheap and tacky overpriced s**t.”

Others questioned why players would want a skin for their pad in the first place, especially now that the market for custom controllers is bigger than ever.

“Especially with something you’re handling, they end up peeling and dirty at the edges, plus they just don’t feel nice in your hands. Just tacky all around, in my opinion,” said another reply.

Luckily, as some fans pointed out, the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth controller skin is just a free extra, so players don’t have to use it and it shouldn’t affect their enjoyment of the game.
