Sledgehammer Games developing Call of Duty 2021 ‘built for next-gen’
Activision has announced that Sledgehammer Games is developing Call of Duty 2021, which will release in Q4 this year.
During the company’s Q4 investor call, Activision executives confirmed that there will be a new Call of Duty releasing later this year.
The company stated that they are looking forward to sharing more information on the ‘next premium entry’ into the Call of Duty franchise.
The big news from the call is that Activision also confirmed that Sledgehammer Games is developing the 2021 title, the first time Activision has mentioned a development studio for the game.
The game is “being built” for next-generation consoles & PC, Activision executives said. Executives also said that the title “will integrate with and enhance the Call of Duty ecosystem.”
“In particular, we are very excited for this year’s premium Call of Duty release. Development is being led by Sledgehammer Games and the game is looking great and on track for its fall release,” said Activision Blizzard Chief Operating Officer.
“This is a built for next generation experience with stunning visuals across campaign, multiplayer and co-operative modes of play, designed to both integrate with and enhance the existing COD ecosystem. We look forward to sharing more details with the community soon.”

Rumors state that Sledgehammer Games will return to World War II era with title, with its name set to be ‘WWII Vanguard.’
Sledgehammer Games‘ last release was in 2017, which was Call of Duty: WWII. The studio has had a rough few years after losing many of the team members following the co-founders departure. The studio has rebuilt, with over 150 new hires in 2020.
There have been a lot of unverified (and fake) rumors suggesting that there wouldn’t be a new premium Call of Duty game this year, but now Activision has re-confirmed that there will in fact be a new game this fall.
When the company plans to reveal the game remains to be seen.
Activision’s President confirmed in a recent interview that Call of Duty: Warzone’s success has changed how they plan to market Call of Duty. They have stated that the change could lead to revealing of their games to be “later in the year” than before.
