According to a reliable insider, Call of Duty players will be able to play Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer for free in the coming weeks.

While Call of Duty: Warzone 2 and DMZ are free-to-play, you’ll need to purchase Modern Warfare 2 to access multiplayer, Spec Ops, and its globe-trotting campaign. With multiplayer being such a great place to level up weapons, players can sometimes take advantage of free-to-play weekends.

According to sources industry insider Tom Henderson, Modern Warfare 2 will be free-to-play for a limited time in December.

In an InsiderGaming report, Henderson writes that “sources with knowledge of Activision’s plans” have said that “Modern Warfare 2 will have its first free multiplayer weekend starting on December 15.”

This coincides with Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2’s Season 1 Reloaded update which Infinity Ward confirms will arrive on Wednesday, December 14. According to Henderson, the free-to-play weekend will run from Thursday, December 15 until late on Sunday, December 18.

This free-to-play weekend would allow you to try out the multiplayer and let you know if it’s worth buying, but also give a nice opportunity to level up plenty of weapons.

The Season 1 Reloaded update brings Chimera Assault Rifle and the chaotic Shipment map to multiplayer. It also brings Destiny-style Raids, but Henderson didn’t mention if the free access will include Spec Ops.

These free-to-play weekends sometimes coincide with a Double XP weekend, but there’s been no mention of any yet.

It’s worth bearing in mind that nothing has been confirmed by Activision yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated once we know more about any possible free-to-play weekend for Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer.

You can also check out when Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 Season 2 will arrive, bringing more weapons, maps, and Operators.
