Larian Studios let players build their own characters for their adventure in Baldur’s Gate 3, but some fans say that the lack of story background for wizards makes it difficult to stand out after recruiting Gale during Act 1. Here’s what the Baldur’s Gate 3 community said about it.

Baldur’s Gate 3 players have had enough time to experiment with the reactions and dialogue options of each companion while traveling through Faerun. Larian Studios gave all of them deep backgrounds that have important parts through the narrative, but some have found that this might not be as exciting as it sounds when trying to role-play.

In a Reddit post called “Playing as a wizard with Gale in the party feels kinda lame,” players explained that using their own characters instead of an Origin doesn’t fit the story, particularly with Gale.

“I like Gale as a character overall, but I’ve found that if I’m playing a wizard he has the effect of constantly overshadowing my character, in a way that isn’t really true if you share a class with other companions. This is because unlike other companions, Gale’s story is very focused on how he’s pretty much the most talented, special and (until very recently) powerful wizard in the world short of maybe Elminster,” described Redditor ‘Randomnate.’

Fans pointed out that this also happens when choosing the same race and class as other companions, such as Lae’zel’s interactions with other Githyanki or even the Wyll’s ability to talk to his patron Mizora, despite the obvious implications.

“Two easy solutions. Play as Gale Origin or never let him out of the portal. Either way, you are now the greatest wizard in your group,” joked user ‘KnightofVictory.’

Other Baldur’s Gate 3 players suggested that it’s better to play as a Sorcerer to make some contrast with Gale’s powers and let the classic rivalry between the classes make light of the situation. “You can be a Sorc and you get to insult him 24/7, well if you choose to,” said Redditor ‘FuzzyGummyBunny.’

A fan pointed out that Gale is set to be one of the best wizards of Faerun, but the Mind Flayers’ tadpole reset everyone back to level one, which gives players a bit of a chance if they choose to compete with him.

That’s why Baldur’s Gate 3 players advise against playing as a wizard if they plan to team up with Gale.
