After the devs announced the new Riot ID system, the Valorant community expressed their discontent with the decision to have to pay to change their name in the game.

Riot Games have revealed that starting on November 20, 2023, they will be phasing out Summoner Names in favor of implementing Riot IDs, creating a unified naming system that encompasses all of the developer’s games.

Following this announcement, players of Valorant, as well as League of Legends and Riot’s other games, expressed their frustration with this “super disappointing” change that restricts them to changing their Riot ID only once per year or paying around $10 in in-game currency to do so.

The developers have not yet addressed the numerous complaints, but Valorant players have been comparing this change to other shooter franchises like Overwatch and Counter-Strike arguing that Valve solved this issue almost a decade ago.

One Reddit user even made an appraisal of how this change will affect the competitive Esports scene of Valorant. As a player joins a team, they have to carry the team’s tag in front of their name, and every time they change teams, they will be penalized by paying the extra fee to change the tag, unless that player manages to stick with one team for an entire year.

Many players agree that the restriction of changing the name only once a year is excessive. Some have suggested that Riot should consider allowing name changes once a month at most or revert to how it was in League of Legends, where you could change your Summoner Name as often as you’d like in exchange for Blue Essence earned by playing games.

If you’re one of the players who is not happy with this new decision by Riot, you should know that in the last paragraph of the Riot ID announcement, the developers mention that the decision to limit name changes to once a year is not 100% final, and they will evaluate the first few weeks or months starting on November 20, 2023, to potentially reduce the restriction.
