A remake of the highly acclaimed Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is reportedly in development. Here’s everything we know about the potential remake of 2013’s pirate adventure.

Ubisoft has more than a handful of Assassin’s Creed games in development. Currently, four known major games are in the works, including an AAA mobile game. While Assassin’s Creed Mirage saw the franchise dial back to its roots, it’ll return to its newfound RPG route with Assassin’s Creed Codename Red later this year.

Other notable confirmed projects include Codename Hexe, set during the witch trials in the Holy Roman Empire. A multiplayer Assasin’s Creed title, Project Invictus, is also confirmed, and there are a couple more rumored to be in the works.

It is a franchise that has been unwaveringly producing blockbuster results for the French publisher, so having many related games in development isn’t surprising. But, is Ubisoft also remaking the beloved pirate game? Here’s all we know about Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remake.

Is Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remake in development?

Ubisoft has not made any official announcement regarding the Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Remake, at the time of writing. However, according to multiple reports and leaks, the remake is in development.

On June 2023, Kotaku first reported that a remake of the 2013 rum-soaked pirate game is in the works at Ubisoft.

Another report from Insider Gaming on January 30, 2024, further leaked details on the potential remake. Per Insider Gaming, the remake is internally known as Project Obsidian, and the development for it has set sail internally. It is said to be a full remake rather than a simple remaster, and is said to be years away.

Ubisoft canceled three in-development titles, and a sequel to Ubisoft Quebec’s Immortals: Fenyx Rising last year. While we don’t have specifics of these three canned games, we do know Immortals was axed to have Ubisoft Quebec focus on Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, their next major title from the franchise.

As the publisher is leaning heavily into the Assassin’s Creed franchise, a remake of one of their most well-received games doesn’t seem like a far stretch.

That’s all we know, but if we do have more news on the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake, we’ll be sure to update you. For more Assassin’s Creed and other games, check out:
