According to a leaker, the long-awaited Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer remaster has been canceled and won’t be following in the footsteps of CoD 4 Remastered.

It was back in 2016 that Raven Software faithfully remastered the historic FPS title Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It featured a spruced up, shinier-looking campaign, and a full recreation of the game’s groundbreaking multiplayer component.

Modern Warfare 2 had its campaign remastered in 2020, and it was expected that the online portion of the game would also be getting similar treatment.

There’s been a lot of back and forth over the state of the game, but now, thanks to a CoD leak, it appears as though it won’t be happening after all.

Modern Warfare 2’s online multiplayer was incredibly influential as it saw the rise of 360 no-scoping, trickshots, and the true rise of video games on the YouTube scene.

This led to the formation of most of the world’s leading CoD clans we know today such as FaZe and OpTic, and would also lead to the modern-day tropes of YouTubers and streamers.

But a potential nostalgia trip has been crushed if a Tweet from Call of Duty leaker Ralph is to be believed. It simply read: “Modern Warfare 2: Remastered Multiplayer, canceled by Activision.”

They don’t elaborate on why this is. But if it’s true, then it’s a slightly perplexing decision as the potential revenue this would generate could be huge.

Potentially, Activision doesn’t want to have multiple online services running at the same time as it would mean that their player base would be scattered across 2019’s Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Warzone, and CoD Mobile.

As with everything that falls into the leaks and rumor category, don’t take this as being completely accurate, and we’ll see if any further information comes to light.
