Auntie Ethel in Baldur's Gate 3

The Overgrown Tunnel in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be one of the most challenging experiences for many in Act 1. Here’s everything you need to know to get through the Overgrown Tunnel safely in BG3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has a ton of different chain quests with multiple endings, each of which can impact the outcome of your playthrough. As you are traveling through the Sunlit Wetlands, you can come across a place named “The Teahouse” to look for a cure for your party during Act 1.

However, if you successfully reject Auntie Ethel’s advances there and force her to reveal her true self, you’ll come across the Overgrown Tunnel in The Teahouse. It is a hag’s labyrinth that can put your characters’ build to the test unless you have the Wisdom proficiency.

Here’s everything to know about how to get through the Overgrown Tunnel in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Where to find the Overgrown Tunnel in BG3

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll need to go to Auntie Ethel’s Teahouse (X:61, Y:262) to go through the Overgrown Tunnel. After a chat with characters named Auntie Ethel and Mayrina, you can look for a secret pathway near the entrance.

There, you’ll find a fireplace, which a successful Perception check will reveal to be an illusion. You can go through it to get to the Overgrown Tunnel and start looking for Auntie Ethel.

Alternatively, you can also charge Auntie Ethel and force her to reveal her true self, and that will initiate a fight. Auntie Ethel, who will now be the Hag in question will flee to the Overgrown Tunell, and you can follow her after the fight.

How to get through Overgrown Tunnel Door in BG3

After finding Auntie Ethel’s dungeon in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll see a Gnarled Door that will block the entrance to the rest of the tunnels, but you’ll have a few options to “open” it.

You can try picking up a Whispering Mask that is on the table next to the door and equip it on the character with the highest Wisdom score of your party.

Once you are equipped with the Whispering Mask, you’re going to be able to get through the door, but the character that’s using it will have to try saving themselves from insanity by constantly succeeding in Wisdom checks. If they fail to do so, they will become a minion for Auntie Ethel.

The Gnarled Door will try to dissuade you from continuing your quest.

If you don’t have any characters with Wisdom Saving Throws like a Druid, you’ll need to pass the door and unequip the mask as fast as possible. If you fail to do this, the character will go insane and start attacking their teammates. Be aware that you can only remove the mask after you kill them.

The easiest way to get past through the Gnarled Door in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to simply command your party to go to the other side without interacting with the object. Alternatively, players can simply walk in if they make the right choices even without the mask as well.

After going through the Gnarled Door, you’ll find four minions of Auntie Ethel’s who are waiting for you in the next room. If you’re using a mask, they won’t attack you, but once you remove it, they’ll become hostile toward you.

Baldur’s Gate 3: How to get through Noxious Fumes at Overgrown Tunnel

After you cross the Gnarled Door in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll face a multi-platform level that’s filled with traps and Noxious Fumes. To avoid getting poisoned, you can summon a Magic Hand along with an item, so it blocks the vents that are spiting the gas out.

The Whispering Mask can also protect you from the Noxious Fumes.

You can also try blocking the vents by burning through the Noxious Fumes and quickly placing an object on them, but keep in mind that the gas will appear again.

After you’re done with this part, you’ll start a difficult fight where you’ll need to rescue Mayrina from a burning cage while facing Auntie Ethel in her hag form. Once you have saved her, head to the room at the corner of the area and get to the teleporter to head back.

You can also try and help the other trapped NPCs flee the Overgrown Tunnels like Elfrin and Lorin. However, keep in mind that you will need some more Wisdom and Perception checks to help them as well in Baldur’s Gate 3.

That’s everything you need to know to get through the Overgrown Tunnels in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you want to know more about how to survive while adventuring in Faerun, read these guides below:
